4 out of 5 stars All around good cooking...   January 15, 2002

I pour over my Gourmet the moment it arrives. I mentally mark recipes to try and figure out which ones I can't (usually due to lack of ingredients at my local grocery). Then I spend the next month cooking up delicious concoctions. I have bought this as a gift for so many of my foodie friends. I recommend it!

2 out of 5 stars Mostly for people who eat out in NY, not home cooks.   December 16, 2001

After subscribing to and enjoying "Gourmet" for over a decade, I recently let my subscription run out. Over a year ago the editorial staff of the magazine changed, and with it, the content of the magazine. The "Gourmet" I knew and loved was always a treat to receive because it focused on exciting and complex recipes that were going to be fun and challenging to cook at home. The recipes were very user friendly, and no matter how advanced, always designed to be prepared in a home kitchen.

The new "Gourmet" is much more of a travel magazine than a cook's magazine. It particularly focuses on New York restaurants, and most of the recipes showcase famous dishes from various restaurants, not recipes that were designed for the home cook. While the old "Gourmet" certainly had its fair share of restaurant and travel coverage, the focus was on different culinary traditions and exciting culinary innovations. In other words, it was a more scholarly look at cooking. The new magazine feels like a bunch of fluff pieces set up by New York PR agents. Next time I'm planning a trip to New York, I'll probably pick up an issue to see what's new and hot, but this isn't the kind of information that's useful to me on a monthly basis.

4 out of 5 stars A good dependable reasource   December 12, 2001

I like this magazine for a variety of reasons. First of all I like the informative articles regarding a paticular food subject. Cooking shows only seem to high the highlights, but when I want more about something this is a good source. Secondly this has a section where they feature restaurant recipes, always something that I welcome. It has information about restaurants. In addition to all of these things they often share several good recipes each month. I have always been pleased with their choices. Overall I give this a 4 because I would like to see more recipes. While the format is good, I personally like to collect recipes, and prepare new dishes.

5 out of 5 stars Still have all my back issues   November 22, 2001

Started reading/collecting Gourmet in 1967. Still turn to old issues when I'm planning a big dinner party. Even my father enjoyed this magazine because of the beautiful travel photography. Truly a classic

Gourmet was one of the first magazines I bought when I took up gourmet cooking as a hobby. It's not that there is anything particularly "bad" about the magazine it's just very old fashioned in its sensibility. Maybe if you are in the 50+ crowd this magazine speaks to you, didn't find much modern sensibility and it seemed to be speaking to the snooty dinner party set, guess if that's you it's a 5 star thing, for me it is average.
