5 out of 5 stars Excellent source of information   September 5, 2002

Whether you're a wine geek or just someone who is looking for good, reliable information on wine, restaurants, and other gustatory delights, then this is a magazine for you. Throughout the year, their special features on regional releases -- such as Napa, Washington, Oregon, Bordeaux, Italy, Burgundy, Rhone, Germany, Austria, and others -- help provide an overview of typical wine styles that one can expect. The reviews of the wines themselves (several hundred per issue) offer guidance to those making purchases. I find the profiles of the up and coming wineries and winemakers to be interesting as it sometimes provides more of an indication on the direction of wines from certain regions than the reviews themselves.

The downside is that unlike some of the other wine review-oriented publications that do not take advertising (Parker's Wine Advocate, Steve Tanzer), the reviews and articles sometimes appear to be a bit gushing. But, then, this is a magazine for enthusiasts and some industry boosterism is to be expected.

Regardsless, this is still highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Wine or lifestyle magazine?   July 31, 2002

I've had gift subscriptions to the Wine Spectator in the past but have always dropped them at the end of the run. Why? Well, I'm serious about wine and the Spectator is more of a lifestyle rag. Travel and food articles generally take up half the magazine. Another complaint is the number of wines they review for people with more money than sense, the $.../bottle with 125 cases made in a year wines. Still, it is a good resource and the wine reviews section is a great assist in filtering through the hundreds of new wines released each month.

I can't taste them all, much as I'd like to.

5 out of 5 stars Eat, drink, and be merry!   December 17, 2001

The magazine knows what its audience wants: information about different varieties of wine. But this is more than just a wine magazine. It offers readers a comprehensive set of subjects related to wine: eating out, cooking, grape growing, collecting strategies, even periodic hotel recommendations. All of these topics, however, are ultimately connected to wine in some way. But the core value offered by the magazine is in its discussion of wine varieties, winemaker profiles, comprehensive tasting surveys of wines from different regions and different vintages, and characteristics of wines produced in different regions.

Need a good bottle of wine to go with dinner but don't want to pay too much? It's easy to spend too much for a bottle of wine. As any good store clerk will tell you, it's much harder to get a great bottle of wine for a low price. The reviews/ratings in Wine Spectator hold fairly true to my taste preferences -- so I've been happy. But, the only way that you'll know if you agree with the ratings from Wine Spectator are if you try them. Like any review, keep in mind that wine reviews are very subjective and complicated by the fact that some wines can be damaged in transit. The reviewers are experienced and take this and many other factors into consideration.

The magazine offers good value if you're interested in wine.

4 out of 5 stars An entertaining and pretty resource for wine and food lovers   October 27, 2001

This is a large format (11 x 14?) magazine whose beautiful pictures make wine and food lovers drool.

You can count on the wine reviews to span everything from inexpensive every day bottles to those that should be cellared for a special occasion. Wine Spectator also covers the people, places and business of wine. All this, and you get wonderful pictures and information about traveling to and enjoying wine regions around the world.

My only complaint is that it comes about every 3 weeks, which is a little often for me. Once a month would be fine.

5 out of 5 stars Life's too short to drink bad wine.   October 27, 2001

The format of this magazine, it's dimensions and heft, reveal much about Wine Spectator's coverage of the subject matter. So much to learn and experience and so little time.

Wine Spectator does an excellent job of covering the wine world, it's fascinating history and contemporary culture, the mind blowing breadth of wine offerings, and invaluable guidance on how to approach, acquire, care for, and enjoy wine.

I've found almost all of the articles of interest. Often times I end up discovering a new varietal or regional wine I knew nothing about and had no interest in. This has really helped me expand my palette as well as my knowledge...and my modest cellar.

If you know alot about wine, you probably read Wine Spectator already, because you know how much more there is to discover. If you are at all interested in wine, grab this magazine and read it from front cover to back. You'll be anxious for the next issue, and your next visit to your local wi!ne merchant.
