1 out of 5 stars So where's the beef (or any other ingredient)?   May 12, 2004

My very kind neighbor brings me her copy of Gourmet every month, along with the admonishment of, "I don't cook like this." Neither do I, but mostly because I cannot find the articles.

With few exceptions, I have never seen a magazine with so many ads and so little content. Articles are sometimes strung out for pages and pages, just to force you to look at one more ad. This is annoying in a news magazine, but deadly in a cooking magazine. I found myself very confused following a recipe, only to discover on the "next page" a special advertising supplement that looks exactly like the recipe I was reading. When does anyone add mustard to a cake? Disaster struck.

Some people probably swear by Gourmet, but my neighbor and I swear at it. I would give this 0 stars if Amazon allowed me.

1 out of 5 stars Too nouvelle cuisine for me   April 14, 2004

Gourmet is a good magazine if you like to keep up with what is considered trendy. The articles and restaurant reviews are relevant if you live in or near very large cities, i.e. New York, L.A., etc. Almost all the recipes end up with one or two exotic ingredients that can't be found unless you happen to live in one of these very large cities with lots of nice trendy food markets. If you are just looking for some really tasty, simple recipes try Southern Living and leave Gourmet on the coffee table.

5 out of 5 stars Rooted in tradition, yet always up to date   February 20, 2004

Gourmet magazine has been around for over 60 years now, but by the fresh look and the up-to-date topics and trends you would never know. Fortunately the editors of the magazine also take pride in the treasure chest of their publication's history and firmly believe that old does not have to mean out of date or bad. So every once in a while they go back to wonderful recipes or articles of the past that have stood the test of time. And this is what Gourmet is all about in general: good quality. The recipes are always solid and can be recreated in your kitchen with reliable success. The table decorating and entertaining tips and themes strike a good balance between the fancy and the everyday useful suggestions. While this is definitely to be considered an upscale magazine, you don't have to be well off to live well in Gourmet style. I have subscribed to Gourmet for years now and still look forward to every new issue.

2 out of 5 stars not the best   December 30, 2003

I currently subscribe to this magazine, but will not be renewing at the end of the year. There are far too many advertisements and too few recipes, the majority of them being fairly complex and time-consuming. I prefer Cooking Light recipes any day.

1 out of 5 stars New Issue disappoints   December 18, 2003

Just got the new Gourmet and everything about it is different--and not in a good way. They've put recipes over color photos and it's soooo hard to read. And why do I want to buy Gourmet to read about a kid's grilled cheese and cupcake birthday party...I could get that in Family Circle. This one disappoints.
