Good Bye Gourmet April 19, 2006 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
I've subscripted to Gourmet for years but I let my subscription run out. The lifestyle articles keep pushing out the recipies. As I read through food magazines I dog-ear the page with a recipe I want to try. In the last year there were very few dog-eared pages and it wasn't worth continuing the subscription.
Would you like some recipes with your ads? December 21, 2005 19 out of 21 found this review helpful
Today I purchased my first and probably last issue of Gourmet. While there were plenty of recipes (some of which I won't use but they were still cool to look at) there were TONS of ads.
It makes you wonder either a) how much the people who make this magazine get paid or b) for all the ads why this isn't free.
I can see the need for a few ads so that we the consumers don't have to pay a fortune for a good magazine. But I took out 33 pages of ads and figured there were about 140 full page ads. That's over half of the magazine which is 260 pages. That's really sad.
Recipe wise, some of them look interesting and very gourmet, but there are things you need to have that I can't get in the middle of the U.S.
And about three of the six articles were interesting to read - when you could find them slipped inbetween their plethora of ads.
Fine Cooking is still the best one out there.
Pretty interesting October 29, 2005 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
I am a budding cook. I enjoy it immensely as a hobby. I like to be inspired by as many outside sources as possible. I recently started subscribing to "Gourmet" magazine. While I do agree that there is lots of advertisements, more than necessary and maybe one too many travel articles, I still enjoy reading the magazine page for page. What I can appreciate about this magazine that it is slightly more less high end than its rival "Bon Appetit" which I think over the years has become more geared to the snobby food lover than to those who live on a budget. There are still quite a bit of recipes that are quite fancy but there seems to be a good number of recipes that are simple and basic, not to mention affordable for those on a budget and aren't concerned with the presentation of the dish. I enjoy reading "Gourmet". I wish they would cut down on the travel articles and ads and include more recipes but otherwise it's a good source of inspiration for me.

I have over 16 years of past issues, but times have changed for Gourmet. What was once a beautiful publication with exquisite photography has become a quagmire of advertising. How disappointing to compromise this keepsake magazine to the "bling-bling" of over exposed products and services. I no longer subscribe, but do miss my old friend. Michigan,USA.
