I subscribe to a few magazines--Bon Appetit, Intermezzo and Saveur. Saveur is lovely but it's more a coffee table book than anything else. I never make any of the recipes in it; can't find most of the ingredients and the locales are a little too exotic for my taste. For real home cooks, try Bon Appetit, or even better, Intermezzo, a beautiful new magazine you can actually cook from.

My husband has subscribed to Saveur since the beginning. He is a former Gourmet subscriber who had that mag for almost 5 years. Saveur is an honest, earthy, lush magazine that will enlighten you about other cultures and help you to enjoy their cuisine. It is not chock full of ads like some other cooking mags. The writing is excellent and the recipes are such that you can actually cook them. The food is covered with an emphasis on authenticity and respect. If you love the unpretentious food of the world--the food of love-- you will love Saveur.

I have received almost all of the cooking and travel magazines out there and have to say that Saveur is by far one of the best. Not only are the recipes unique and delicious, the beautifully written articles on the cities and countries where the recipes are from are mesmerizing. The photo essays capture the food and culture of the city of focus, bringing the reader closer to the experience of the recipes shared. Some months focus on a particular region, while others pick out an ingredient of the season (such as apples in the most recent addition). After living in Japan for many years, a recent article on Sumo brought back to life the exquisite culture and cuisine I once shared.I was afraid that the ingredients might be difficult to find given that it is based on international locations, but I have not found this to be a problem. They even took the time to create an 'where to order the food' list at the back for ingredients that aren't at the corner store. This would make a perfect gift for the cook in your life who has an interest in international cuisine and culture.

I enjoy this magazine because of the articles about families and their traditions. Some recent offerings were an article about a family who canned tomatoes for friends and family, and a heartwarming history of Thanksgiving for a family in California who combined foods of India with traditional American foods. What other magazines would have such articles? I study the sociology of food. How what we eat affects and is affected by our environment, religion, income, etc. The articles in Saveur invite you in and then delight, exceeding your expectations.
