Don't Bother August 10, 2008 I bought this machine to replace a series of Cuisinart coffee machines that just kept breaking. Sadly the Krups quickly became unusable. Firstly there is a problem with the filter basket. When the coffee pours through the filter basket the metal cover plate expands and the filter basket pops open. This is very annoying as I then have hot coffee sitting in the basket and dripping onto the counter. Secondly - after 6 months of use - the coffeemaker started leaking water from the back. The Krups stainless steel looks great and is easy to use but the quality isn't there. The printed 'Lock and twist' markings rub off and the lid on the carafe becomes temperamental. This coffeemaker limped along for 6 months; which for $100 is not what I'd call good value. I've now bought a differetnt model and manufacturer which will hopefully work.
Disappointing Entry From Krups August 7, 2008 I just took our 1.5 year old Krups FM5 to the basement and brought an old Krups Aroma Control out of mothballs temporarily. The FM5 is the third Krups thermal carafe machine we've owned and from the beginning we were quite disappointed in both performance and construction. The push-to-pour button on the handle failed after less than a week, since then we've been pushing down on the bulb at the center of the lid to get the coffee to pour.
Whenever making fewer than ten cups we had to take a wild guess at the amount of water necessary because air bubbles flood the glass pipe on the side of the reservoir rendering it useless as a measuring device.
The reservoir has leaked to some degree since the first day. Sometimes there's a puddle the size of a half dollar, a few times we've had to clear the counter to wipe up the mess. Now it seems that one of the internal tubes is failing - not the performance or endurance I'd expect from a $100 appliance. Even more disappointing is that it's a Krups, a brand that we have truly come to adore. Unfortunately, we're shopping for another brand that will provide better service and longevity for the price.
coffee maker July 29, 2008 I am disappointed at the overall quality of this coffee maker. Specifically, I believe it brews too fast or the water temperature is not hot enough to produce the full coffee flavor. Although the coffee maker is new, it immediately got air in the water gauge tube making it difficult to add the correct amount of water. Also, the latch allowing the filter holder to open is faulty.
Piece of junk!!!! June 16, 2008 Like another reviewer, our unit almost immediately started displaying the "low water" indicator when the unit was full, causing the unit to turn off immediately. Additionally, I like my coffee as strong as possible (14 rounded teaspoons, or whatever fits in the filter, per 12 cups water). Despite the liberal use of coffee grounds, this unit amazingly managed to make the coffee look and taste like lukewarm, brown sewer water.
Krups Coffee Maker May 30, 2008 Good product. Makes great coffee. Carafe has to be tilted completely over to empty last bit of coffee. Well made product.
