this gadget doesn't work that well. True, it takes some of the air out, maybe as much as half, but that still leaves half the oxygen IN, spoiling the wine at a slower rate--2-4 days at best instead of 1-2. NOT the two weeks Madeiline Miller quotes. To really preserve the wine, try the inert gas cans $9 for 120 shots, less than ten cents per use, and they will keep wine fresh for two weeks or more. They are what the restuarants in Napa and Sonoma are using. I do like the Vacu Vin canister sets though, they keep moisture out well.
It's better than the "featured reviews" say April 5, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
No, it does not create a total vacuum in the bottle. But when you sqeeze the stopper to remove it and you hear the "swish" of air being sucked into the bottle, you know something of a vacuum has been created--otherwise the bottle wouldn't be acting like your "vaccum" cleaner.
I also think the opinion that this process harms some types of wines is pretty subjective. It's likely to be based on individual tastes as opposed to any objective factual findings.
What does this contraption do? It extends the life of the wine for a few hours. If you think it's going to keep your wine fresh for several days, you will be sorely disappointed. If you plug the bottle, pump like hell and put the leftover in the refrigerator, your wine should be good for overnight. Don't expect this to be a miracle product, however.
Newer wine making methods mean we get better quality wines that can be consumed younger than the wines of even 20 years ago. But wine still needs to be consumed pretty soon after pulling the cork. So, if you have a particularly good bottle you want to open and you know you can't drink it all by yourself, invite someone over to help you.
Awesome product for cheap March 26, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Simple to use, very affordable...and it actually works..very well I might add.
I liked it so much a bought a second one as a gift.
Very pleasantly surprised March 9, 2007 I was very pleased to see that the Vacu Vin works VERY easy - and keeps the wine stored very nicely. I had purchased another type of wine saver earlier in the year and it was very difficult to use and ended up breaking within 2 days, plus it was very expensive. The Vacu Vin is priced great and works very easy. A few quick "pumps" and the air is out and when you want to pour another glass of wine it is very easy to release the tab, pour and then pump it again, if needed. I am going to give the Vacu Vin as a gift with a bottle of wine to some of my friends for Christmas. I would definitely recommend this item.
Seems to work fine March 6, 2007 I just received this item a few weeks ago and have only used it a few times. Once I open a bottle of wine, it usually takes 4 or 5 days to finish it. It is much easier to use this item rather than putting the original cork back in the bottle. For that it gets 4 stars. I do not notice any difference (better or worse) in taste of the wine after 3 or 4 days in the fridge. The item is very easy to use and only takes a few pulls to remove the air. The instructions are simple and straighforward.
