High expectations -- lower results. July 26, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
First, let me say that I'm a HUGE fan of Bodum products. I have two Bodum Chambord 12-Cup/48-Ounce Coffee Maker presses that I use in two locations EVERY DAY, and they are wonderful, sturdy, and make the best cups of coffee I can make.
This chocolatiere does a decent job of mixing, and the mixing approach is quite novel and ingenious, but there's just no way that the little propeller can get all of the chocolate -- whether powdered or solid -- mixed in. You always get residue on the bottom that's wasted, and if you try to open the device to add more milk or to stir/scrape with a spoon, you make a real mess with dripping chocolate everywhere.
I think the picture is a bit deceptive too -- as others have pointed out, they must have pumped that chocolate for an EXTREMELY long time to get that amount of froth on the top.
It's solid in construction, but I'm not sure how long the rubber-like rim on the cap will last when exposed to the dishwasher, and that rim is necessary to keep the churning chocolate from flying out the top.
It's a clever idea, but I think chocolate can only be mixed well with something like a whisk actually hitting the bottom of the pot/jar/container. If they'd redesign that element, I think they'd have a winner.
Sounds silly but it is great for many uses! July 26, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
OK, I'll admit, when I first saw this I thought it was a bit silly, I mean who drinks hot cocoa enough to buy a special pot just for that purpose? Well, I was very surprised at how well it worked for that purpose and soon realized it could do so much more then just make hot cocoa!
The pitcher itself is a perfect size and is made of very durable glass like that found in a lab. It is light weight, very clear and durable. The plunger is metal on the lid and screw shaft and the propellor is a durable plastic. I liked that I could easily use my hand blender in the pitcher to make smoothies or morning protein shakes and then use the propellor lid to keep the remainder blended after it settled.
I've used it for hot chocolate as directed using 3.5 ounces of chocolate pieces to 34 ounces of milk, I used unsweetened chocolate and added 1/3 cup of sugar. You just dump in the ingredients, put the pitcher minus the lid in the microwave or use hot milk, then you just put the propellor lid on and give it a few pumps up and down and as simple as that you have a wonderful hot chocolate! No messy pots on the stove just pour and froth, simple!
For a nonfat version I used 10 T of dry cocoa powder to 34 oz. of boiling water, 1 1/3 C. of dry nonfat milk powder, 1/3 C sugar and a pinch of cinnamon. Add some water first then the dry and then the rest of the water and simply pull the plunger up and down. Fat free and delicious and no mess! The leftover is great chilled just give it a few pumps to mix! You can add protein powder to this too.
I think this wood be great for mixing crepe batter as well as large amounts of scrambled eggs for a big family. Also great for mixed party drinks!
This pitcher is also very easy to wash, no hidden crevices just a very smooth easy to get your hand inside shape! The plunger just rinses off easily. I think I will find many more uses for this great pitcher. Maybe they should have named it the Bodum multi purpose frother! Try it I think you will like it too!
A Gift for a Gourmet Chocolate Lover July 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the perfect gift for someone who is creative and enjoys preparing fresh hot chocolate. Each effort can be an exploration and combination of new ingredients and new tastes, depending on the chocolate used and the way it is prepared. On the other hand, if you are lazy and prefer pouring hot water over named brands of mixes, like Nestles or Swiss Miss, this may not be for you. This is clearly a gourmet item and should match a person's willingness to go to gourmet lengths with chocolate.
Other reviewers have spoken about how long this maachine did or did not last. Mine is new, so I cannot comment about that aspect. It works just fine. Having read other reviews, I did not expect too much frothy milk. Mine was delightful, as I was not expecting a capuccino.
I would recommend this item if you have the patience and are interested in experimenting with chocolate. I think it would also be a splendid Christmas gift for a gourmet.
Multipurpose Frother July 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is one of those items that though it is advertised for hot chocolate, can be used for other things as well. When it arrived, I was reminded of my other Bodum items(french press pots). It is aesthetically pleasing and will be fun to serve hot chocolate to company in and the kids felt very special having their very own hot chocolate carafe. The item works as intended and is quite easy to froth the chocolate. If you've ever hand frothed milk for a cappucino drink, you do it the same way. You need to move quickly to introduce air into it. Overall, I am very pleased with this product and will use it often.
The Perfect Gift---- July 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
For any chocolate lovers. My entire family loved this. We found our hot chocolate(even had a cool night right after delivery)was the best ever. Now I know how restaurants make it so good. This will be used often during the winter time. Microwaveable easy, just add my fave- giardelli hot chocolate and milk. I also tried it for my protein drink and found that it did a fine job of mixing the powder up. Now can save on that electricity use. Am planning on ordering these for gifts.
