 A Definite Must Have Kitchen Item! November 11, 2007
This is one of those items you'll wonder how you ever did without once you get it! This particular one is for zesting (oranges and lemons will be zested in seconds, quite literally). The reviewer who said she changed her mind is using the wrong tool for cheese, there is another one for cheese which is wider (as it should be), with different size 'holes/blades'. I went back to the store (Williams and Sonoma) and purchased two other graters after having this one. Now cheeses, coconut, chocolate, just about everything goes across these, and I have not had dulling like she mentions (is she putting it back in its protective sleeve?). I consider myself average usage with these. My mother came over last Christmas and when I handed her this to zest an orange for her Christmas Cranberry Loaves she nearly fell over and HAD to have one! Needless to say it was a gift for her, too! These are inexpensive and for the cook who doesn't have them fantastic gifts - they save so much time and effort! Can't say enough good things about them. There are some things you buy that you like, and there are some things you buy and you say WOW! This one's a WOW.

I use my Microplane for zesting lemons and limes and grating hard cheeses, chocolate, and ginger. It does all these tasks better than any other grater I've used. If you don't have one, get it now.

I have owned this item for over 6 years and now and use it a minimum of twice a week still. I ran across these reviews because I am looking to replace it. And I will.
The bitter truth is, over time it is not as sharp and effective as it used to be and I MISS it big time. I use it for fresh nutmeg, ginger, hard cheeses, cinnamon, lemon/lime zest, etc. etc. etc. ...
I do not use it for expensive parmesan when I want the cheese to be the meat of the flavor [i.e. I usually use a potato peeler when I want a super thin slice of parmesan to top a salad.]
And I concur, this is not the perfect product. Watch those fingers. And it will not produce every result the way that you might want it. I sometimes prefer to chop my garlic. But it is a "Kitchen essential" for me. As a full-time-out-of-the-home working Mom of teens, I do a lot of weekend cooking and a lot of last minute salad prep for dinners and this item is a kitchen work horse.

This things delivers. If you want the flavor burst that garlic or zests were intended to give this gadget is for you. It is solid and well made, for the price a must have for the kitchen. Clean up is easy and the plastic slide cover is a bonus! Get rid of the garlic press- this is what you want to savor the flavors!

This is an outstanding product! My pies now contain perfect pieces of lemon or orange zest!! I would highly recommend it to anyone.
