Riedel makes a better glass January 2, 2008 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
Try this: grab a snifter and a small tulip-shaped wine glass. Measure identical amounts of cognac and pour into each glass. Wait a minute or two and then sniff the bouquets. Does it seem more pronounced from any particular one? If one of the glasses seems to nurture a more profound bouquet, wait a few minutes and repeat the experiment. This time, sniff the most productive glass after you have tried all the other. If it still promotes the bouquet more than the others, you can be sure that the shape is the difference. This experiment is one of several inNew Short Course in Wine,The Now take a taste from each of the glasses. Was there a clear-cut winner? If there was, why wouldn't you use that glass for all the cold beverages that you drink? If you're a relentlessly scientific type, you might try this experiment with both a cheap wine and a more expensive one. You could continue on, sampling reds and whites, sweet wines and dry.
The results of my experiments with glasses suggest that brandy snifters are a waste of time and good brandy. Reach instead for the smaller, tulip shaped spirits glass.

Cognac Snifter January 19, 2004 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I purchased these glasses for a special occasion. They are a great glass for celebrating. Like other Reidel glasses, they are light and enjoyable to drink out of. We also have the 416/71 and for cognac I'll take this glass.
Snap 'em up before they're gone January 4, 2002 21 out of 22 found this review helpful
Riedel has discontinued these snifters. For Cognac (and I suppose that goes for Armagnac and other brandies), Riedel's now suggesting the "Hennesy Cognac" glasses, code 416/71, which look like their port glasses with flared rims. If you love snifters and don't care if the trendy oenophiles turn up their noses, go ahead and get a case of these. Personally, I like nothing better than to roll cognac around in a snifter after dinner. Like the other Vinum glasses, the brandy snifters are grandly scaled, wonderfully balanced and gorgeously proportioned. None of the nose-stuck-in-the-bowl problem that you get with some snifters.
