Expensive but nice December 23, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
These are great glasses! I really enjoy drinking coffee from them (the 12 oz. ones). In fact, I've got one in my hand now.
They fall short of five stars for me mainly because I'm not sure how long they'll last. One of the glasses in my first set arrived shattered, which wasn't a good sign. However, in playing around with the pieces I found that the outer portion of the glass is surprisingly strong. I whacked it hard four or five times with a metal pen and didn't manage to even crack it. The inner wall of the glass seems much more delicate. That's where the breakage had occurred.
When my replacement set arrived (thanks, Amazon), both of these glasses were significantly heavier overall and had thicker lips (where you drink from). They were also about half a centimeter taller. I like the feel of these in my hand better than the original glasses I received. I know that since they're mouth-blown there's bound to be some variation in thickness, shape, etc., but this didn't seem random. The two replacement 12 oz. glasses were identical to each other, and both were different from the original 12 oz. glasses in the same way (heavier, taller). I have to wonder if at some point Bodum decided to beef up their double-layer glassware. Which version will you get if you order these? There's no way to know. Maybe my experience was just a fluke.
A tangential note about shipping: My replacement glasses were sent via a courier service (A1 International), probably because Amazon rushed the replacement order with Christmas coming up. The courier service is well-run, but they didn't arrive until 8:45 p.m. on the day of delivery. Luckily I'd read complaints about Amazon's couriers in the past, so when I saw A1 listed as the shipping company I looked up their phone number and called them to leave my cell phone number with dispatch. If I hadn't done that, I wouldn't have received the replacement package that day since A1 arrived after the front desk had closed and they would have had no way of reaching me. In my opinion, if Amazon is going to use couriers, they should either stress that delivery has to be during normal business hours or request permission to provide after-hours contact information to the courier. Otherwise what's the point of rushing an order? This has no bearing on how many stars I gave the glasses, but I thought other people might find the info. useful.
So far so great December 23, 2008 All glasses arrived intact, well packed and in perfect condition. I heat them with hot water while preparing the coffee or tea and then replace the hot water with the brew. These are not insulated thermal mugs with lids which can retain heat for hours, they simply keep your beverage hot or cold as the case may be for the usual time it may take for you to consume the beverage while doing whatever it is you do. The exterior of the glass does not suffer from condensation or varying temperatures and it is a nice smooth glass in the hands. It is constructed in China, not Denmark as the original Bodum glass products, but it is really lovely and comfortable and with proper care, a pleasure to use. Because they are delicate, I do not stack them and I store them upside down, washing them by hand even though they are dishwasher safe. I prefer to hand wash any delicate items. I look forward to increasing my set with other sizes. The 12 oz is a nice size for my iced tea or cappuccino.
Stylish, well insulated December 20, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I haven't owned these long enough to see how well they hold up to constant dishwasher cleaning and they haven't broken yet. But I can tell that they are stylish, do a good job of keeping beverages hot, despite remaining room temperature on the outside.
They are stylish and functional, and perhaps well made. The only problem I have is that with all the talk about European styling of this hand blown glass, they neglect to tell you that they are made in China. That does not automatically mean that everything in recent media reports applies to these, but I'd be more comfortable with European products that are actually from Europe.
Rick December 13, 2008 beautiful design and definitely nice to handle hot or cold beverages, also very light they feel as if they were made out of paper, they should make martini and margarita glasses, but they don't well perhaps one day. Highly recommended.
LOVE EM December 10, 2008 They are wonderful for humid areas, just dont let your husband pour boiling hot water in sink, with them in it...a bit spendy, but hope to keep my furniture from getting ruined.
