2 out of 5 stars Whatever you do- don't drop it or set it down hard   October 17, 2008

I used to love this company and product. I have show dogs and depend on short perfect nails and use grinders. My first Oster was awesome, and interchangeable with Dremel replacement sanding bands. Then I bought the newer (blue) one at Petsmart. While doing the nails I turned off the tool and set it down hastily, it never worked again. Totally would not turn on. I tried to repair it but everything is so small I couldn't figure out what the problem was. So the next day I bought another out of the store- same kind. While I was doing nails on the grooming table the puppy ran by and snagged the cord and pulled it off the table onto the carpet. It only fell 2.5 feet onto soft carpet but it never worked again either. Same exact situation.
These need to be tougher because they are so light and the cord is so long, things happen and they need to be able to withstand a short drop.
I would recommend this for the cautious pet owner only. People that groom often or groom on a table should really beware. I won't buy this product again.

4 out of 5 stars Oster Pet Nail Grinder   October 14, 2008

I chose this product over the cheaper "Pedi-Paws" as I wanted something that could handle the substantial nails on my shepherd-rottie mix. This looked like it would do the trick and it does. While I wouldn't go so far as to say my dog enjoys these sessions, she does tolerate them. I have been doing short, but frequent sessions to get her accustomed to it. In any event, it is much better than hacking off the nail, and possibly the quick as well!!

5 out of 5 stars WOW! IT MAY BE EXPENSIVE BUT IT WORKS!!!   October 14, 2008

This works great. I just recently bought the pedi paws and that was lousy. Did nothing for my big dogs. That was a waste of $20.00. So, I spent 3 times the price of the pedi paws and now I have something that works. One of my dogs wont let me cut her nails, she pulls just when I'm about to cut. I'd spend 30 minutes wrestling with her until she won and I gave up. She's now sliding around on my kitchen floor because her nails are so long. I was desperate. If I had the time I would of purchased this from Amazon but I was in a hurry and ended up spending $20.00 more then I could of gotten it on Amazon. I bought it at Petsmart. I should of done this years ago. I'm amazed at how well this works. Both my dogs are handling the noise quite well. It's not as noisy as I thought it might be. I'm a happy camper!! Oh yeah, so are my dogs!

The Oster Nail Grinder worked great once you learned how to use it. The directions were poorly written.

5 out of 5 stars Happy I bought it!   September 20, 2008

I'm so happy I bought this! It makes my standard poodle's nails short, smooth and rounded without the potential pain or bleeding caused by nail clippers. I haven't used it on my parrots yet but plan to soon.

The instructions aren't great but it's not hard to figure out. The assembly of the bits is like an electric screwdriver. You press the lock button lightly to hold the metal tube (where the bits go in) in place while you screw or unscrew the the thing that holds the bits in place.

You use the rougher bands for quick, heavy duty grinding, the finer bands for lighter duty (small breed dogs or cats, birds, etc.) and the grinding stone as a finishing tool to finely smooth the nail.

To change the bands, you just have to gently work the band off of the grinding drum and replace with the one you want. Be careful not to stretch the bands or they won't stay securely on the drum.

There's a dial to select the speed you want. Start at the very slowest it can go. Even though it won't really grind anything down, it'll get your animal used to the tool. The next day, go a little higher. Work in baby steps until you and your animal is comfortable with the nail grinder.
