Wishing other cookbooks would learn from this one... March 18, 2008 13 out of 17 found this review helpful
This is flat out - the best cookbook I've ever come across. There is a color picture, nutritional information, prep and cooking times, and "tips" for EVERY recipe. Ingredients are printed in their own color text - making it easy to scan the page for ingredients when preparing to shop/plan.
Ingredients are pretty average - not so obscure that you can't find them at your local store. There is an occasional oil or grain that is not so commonplace, but Tosca offers substitutions for most of those ingredients (or you can sub with things on your own fairly easily). Or you can always find them on amazon - and most likely save some $ there as well.
As for kiddos - kids are easily influenced - if they see you eating a certain way - they will eventually come around. The other part I've found helpful in getting kids to eat healthier - presentation. That is the #1 most important thing when feeding children. Kids like dipping - they like finger foods, or creating their own meal... which a lot of these recipes allow for.
I'm not sure why one review stated recipes are too long either. Recipes times range from 10-60 minutes, with most averaging around the 30-45 minute time frame. If you read through most recipes you can come up with ways to shorten times (or Tosca suggests them). Things that we do for example... prep veggies the morning before (or the entire dish), use leftovers - chicken/rice/etc, instead of cooking things separately throw them in together from the beginning, canned/jar substitutes(beans, garlic, etc). And a lot of the cooking times vary based on your appliances. I can usually knock 5-10 minutes off because our oven cooks faster than what is usually listed.
Many of the animal proteins she suggests are becoming more readily available - turkey & buffalo...I can find both at our local Kroger or Meijers. Sams Club is carrying ground turkey and turkey breasts now for a decent price as well.
Fat content is high"er" on some recipes, but it's not due to saturated or trans fats. I have high cholesterol and I thought that cutting out all fats would be the way to lower it - WRONG. You can't cut fat out of your diet entirely - your body needs those just as much as anything else. You have to choose the right kinds of fats - which Tosca does wisely in each recipe. The key to good nutrition and healthy eating is finding the right balance - not by cutting one thing out or increasing another.
Calories may be higher on some recipes, but if you're eating the 'clean-eating' way... you'll find that you can still manage to be under your total calories per day. The idea Tosca suggests at the beginning of the book: Eat 5-6 small meals every day by eating every 2-3 hours (which is why portion sizes are smaller) - if you do so - you won't be hungry and feel a need to 'super size'; combine lean protein and complex carbs at every meal; drink at least 8 cups of water every day; never miss a meal; carry a cooler with clean-eating foods to get you through the day; avoid over-processed, refined foods (white flour and sugar are EVIL); avoid anything loaded with sugar (soda, juices, etc); avoid alcohol (another sugar); depend on fresh fruits and veggies for fiber, vitamins and enzymes; and stick to proper portion sizes!
As for cost, some ingredients are more costly. However, if you're eating this way, you'll find yourself eating smaller amounts because your body will be using more of the food.
Proteins are all lean - and she offers ways to make recipes gluten free or vegan to accommodate different eating habits. Seasonings involve fresh herbs, fruits, different - good 4 u - oils, etc.
5 stars for the clean-eating concept and cookbook!
Disappointing March 15, 2008 13 out of 16 found this review helpful
I was really excited to get this book. I regularly read Tosca's columns in Oxygen, and was thrilled to find a recipe book she'd written. I have to say I was pretty disappointed once I read through it. There are a couple of good recipes I can use, but the MAJORITY of the recipes use ingredients that are difficult to find (bison, quinoa, pumpkin oil???--you certainly won't find most of them at Kroger's or your average grocery store) and expensive to purchase once you find them. Some of these are fine for the occasional meal, but not practical to prepare on a daily basis unless you're independently wealthy, which I guess being Tosca, you would be. :) I wish she would have taken a more practical approach for those of us moderate income families that also wish to eat healthy meals.
I have 3 small kids that wouldn't DREAM of eating some of the stuff in this cookbook. I wouldn't be able to pass that off to them in even the sneakiest of ways. There were a few family-type recipes we enjoyed, like the whole wheat bread recipe or the summer roasted salmon, and would have liked to have seen more like those. But the majority of these recipes were geared for adults. And really, when you're a busy mom trying make time to eat clean and exercise, do you really have time to make a "kid dinner" and an "adult dinner"? Most of these recipes are just too exotic for the average family.
I'm sure this is a great book for many, it just didn't suit our needs. If you find yourself attracted to exotic recipes and food choices, this just may be the cookbook for you. If, on the other hand, you are trying to eat healthy and relatively inexpensively and feed your family the same way, look elsewhere.

I love this cookbook. There are lots of recipes, and my family loves them also.
Excellent Book February 26, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
We are having a blast trying these recipes. Everything we have tried so far has been very good. The Turkey meatloaf with brown rice rocks. Some recipes are a little complicated and there is such a wide variety of ingredients that you can spend a small fortune just getting the items needed for the recipes. But over all, excellent recipe book. We will recommend it.
Life Changing Results February 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am a competitive athelete who has struggled with hypoglycemia all my life. The priciples in Tosca's Eat-Clean diet have freed me from that problem, and helped me achieve that last bit of my regimen that I had been missing. The cookbook is wonderful. The portion sizes are too large, I think, and in some cases I had to find ingredients that were difficult to find. But, once I embraced it and figured it all out, the recipies are delicious, and make "eating clean" easy and varied. My cooking is now healthier, more colorful, and I have more pure energy than I have ever had in my life. I've also lost 5 pounds in a month, all while eating constantly.
