Cute, but the food is chemical laden & just disgusting. May 4, 2008 40 out of 69 found this review helpful
I'm so beyond confused how anyone could like this book. The reviews have to be done by her friends. By her own admitance in the intro of the book, the author says that she doesn't think healthy food can taste good. She then proceeds to put fiber one cereal in a dressing-less Chinese chicken salad instead of crunchy noodles, I guess. And she suggests dish after dish with the main ingredient being those tasteless tofu noodles that truly feel like you're eating worms! She also uses tons of Splenda and other chemical-y foods. It's like the the whole goal is gorge yourself while eating a few calories. But if you're going to do that, why not just eat carrots and broccoli and other real food? Oh, there are so many brand names in there too, it's like a huge paid advertisement. All of that said, the text is clever. If you're going to read it, ok. But don't think about cooking or eating it. Buy a chef's cookbook for that.

I just stumbled onto the hungry girl website last week, actually the day before the book came out. I ordered the book and have now ordered another one for my mother-in-law for Mother's Day.
I have done weight watchers in the past so I like the fact it has point values.
I tried that Yum Yum Brownie Muffins last night. They were a hit!! (unlike the brownies from Jessica Seinfeld's book) I waited until the family ate a muffin, got positive responses. My daughter was the only one who didn't want to know what was in it, she was afraid of spinach or something.
I liked the Lord of the Onions Rings too.
I can't wait to try more recipes.
A new staple for my healthy kitchen...even the kids dig it! May 3, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have been a subscriber of Lisa Lillien's Hungry Girl newsletter for years and have rarely been disappointed by her wit, product finds, and recipes.
The Hungry Girl tradition of smacking the fat and calories out of popular restaurant fare as well as creating tummy-pleasing dishes the entire family can enjoy continues with the release of Lisa's new book. Hungry Girl isn't just for people following the Weight Watchers plan. Anyone who wants to eat like they're not dieting will benefit from the recipes and the tips that fill the pages. This isn't just a cookbook. Like the title suggests, it's a Survival Guide!
I have two preschoolers and when they beg me for sweet treats, I know I can count on Hungry Girl for great-tasting results without massive sugar and calories. I've already whipped up several of the recipes, and look forward to many, many more. Our faves so far?
- ooey-gooey chili cheese nachos (p.99) - lord of the onion rings (p.104) - cheesy dog tortilla roll-ups (p.151) - apple cinnamon crunch parfaits (p.191) - peach-blueberry oatmeal muffinmania (p.214) - ginormous creamy frozen caramel crunchcake (p.227)
Hooray! Finally! May 3, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Finally, a cookbook that has easy to find ingredients, simple directions and low calorie options. Lisa Lillien is a normal person, creating recipes for normal people, and it shows. Here's a list of some of the recipes that I'm most excited about!
1. Blueberry apple pancake shake up (252 calories for 3) 2. Chinese chicken chop (245 calories) 3. Sassy salsa pumpkin soup (177 for a generous cup) 4. Veggie-friendly asian lettuce wraps (220 calories for 3) 5. Mexi-tato (277 for a whole potato and a ton of toppings) 6. Ooey-gooey chili cheese nachos (216 calories for 1/6 of batch) 7. Lord of the onion rings (153 for a whole onion's worth!) 8. Chilly chocolate cheesecake nuggets (42 for 2) 9. Dreamy chocolate peanut butter fudge (65 calories for 1) 10. Strawberry cheesecake minis (65 for 1)
There's pictures of some of the recipes in the book and pictures of all of them on the website!
Hungry Girl keeps me feeling full! May 2, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
After reading some very good Hungry Girl articles on Yahoo, I was intrigued; here was someone dishing out ORIGINAL ideas that I have not heard of (amazing, since I'm perpetually watching what I eat).
When I saw she had a book, I bought it immediately and took two of my guy friends on a grocery trip so that I could buy all the ingredients I needed. It was a little more expensive than I would have liked... I paid more than I would have liked for what I estimate is 3 weeks of food for one person. But, to be fair, a portion of the supplies were things that would last a long time, like healthier-choice condiments, spices, bake-ware... things that a kitchen-nervous, frozen food aficionado like me didn't have on hand.
I made a meal of "perfect pepperoni pizzas" and my guy friends actually liked them! I was full for the whole night after eating them. This morning I had a breakfast burrito (without the cheese) which was about 175 calories and some skim milk (80 calories), and I was full until lunch, even when it was a late lunch!
I'm so excited to try out all the recipes! This is coming from someone who can barely find her way around her own kitchen, so it's definitely accessible to nervous cooks like myself. There are so many awesome secrets in the book, even for a seasoned dieter like myself. I use an online calorie counter to input my calories, and I can already tell that my fiber is going up and my fat intake is going down because of Hungry Girl's meals.
If you're looking for the usual "lemon chicken with steamed vegetables" recipes, then this book is NOT for you. If you're looking for a way to guiltlessly enjoy jalapeno poppers, a way to impress guests with healthy, delicious snacks, a way to really ENJOY watching what you eat, then this is the the book for you!
