Why? November 17, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Why? Why has Garfield become more popular than God? Why do people consistently think that Garfield isn't an unbelievably dull, phoned in hack comic? Is Jim Davis (the Paul J. Smith of the comic strip world) brainwashing legions of his fellow man into believing a comic that uses the same four jokes over and over again (Garfield hates Mondays, Garfield is fat, Jon is a loser, Odie is thick) is the greatest thing since sliced bread? I wouldn't be surprised if he is, given how Garfield fans resort to childish preteen insults when someone with a brain tells them Garfield is bad.
These first three books aren't that different from modern Garfield, aside from the fact that Davis draws possibly the ugliest characters ever. He hasn't yet perfected his hack style of using the same few drawings over and over again (which would hit its peak in the late 90's), or the "having characters move by drawing curvy lines next to them" style, but the ever present wickedly unfunny jokes are done with absolute perfection.
If you like Garfield and have a desperate need to flush all you money down the toilet, then you should probably check yourself into an asylum, but until then, you might as well buy this, you crazy bastard.
Enjoyed by a Garfield nut! October 24, 2008 My 8 year old son is slightly obsessed with Garfield. This book is just as good as all the others. The newest addition to his collection that he's really enjoying is 20 Years & Still Kicking, Garfield's Twentieth Anniversary Collection. Includes sketches from Jim Davis's original sketchbook, photos, trivia. Definitely a must have for any serious Garfield nut!
won't dissapoint anyone with any sence of humour May 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm now on page 24 and can say for sure that this book is a masterpiece and Jim Davis is a genius! There is not a big number of good comics in the world and Garfield is one of them. The book is large and sure is worth your money. But if you don't like reading books that make you feel happy, this one is not for you.
4th Grade Class Top Ten Winner May 4, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Garfield is a cat that can talk to his owner named John. Garfield is the problem because he mistreats his owner. Also in his book called Garfield on town. It is were he meats his mother he doesn't like how they live thou. He also gets in trouble with gang cats. So they come for him and his family. Will they get him or will he get away? Find out by reading Garfield on town. The author's message is it's ok to have some fun. Also it's good to laugh a little. It is in our class's top ten list because it is very very funny book. Also it has a talking funny cat that is fat.

This is a wonderful collective of comics, replaced the long lost first copies I had as a kid.
