Cookbook with a clue! November 30, 2005 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
I thought I found good recipe books in the past. Previously I defined a "good recipe book" as a recipe book where at least 50% of the recipes could be useful at some stage... Vegan with a Vengeance has changed that! There is not one recipe in this book that I don't want to try. It is filled with creative tasty foods that don't take hours (or days!) to prepare. My kitchen already contains plenty of the ingredients used in this book, and those ingredients I don't have are easily found in local stores and markets. (You may find you have to plan ahead for some of the recipes, as you may not have all the ingredients on hand, but it is well worth it!) Herbs and spices are used liberally - there is not one recipe I would describe as "plain" or "bland." (If anyone tries to tell you that vegan food is boring, this is the book to whack them over the head with.)
I was pleased that by page 9 Scrambled Tofu was mentioned twice, and then it's the first recipe in the book - I love Scrambled Tofu. The helpful messages by "Fizzle" - Isa's cat - are very useful and a great touch! You don't only get recipes in this book - you also get cheerful personal kitchen-related anecdotes and cooking tips... It's not only the recipes that rock!
A good book for beginners and more advanced cooks who don't like to spend all day in the kitchen, but still want to impress their friends with tasty feasts.

Update: Isa's foods tend to be richer than what I eat on a daily basis, and I have found I use VwaV recipes when I have friends and family over or for special occasions. I use How It All Vegan! more frequently, when it's just for myself and my partner, as it sticks to a smaller range of ingredients that I always have on hand, and I'm not really one to plan ahead where meals are concerned... but everyone's kitchen and tastes are different! I love the recipes in both books, and wouldn't part with either of them.
If You Could Have Only One Vegan Cookbook - Get THIS! November 22, 2005 200 out of 204 found this review helpful
I am a relatively new vegan, and I dove in head first and purchased a TON of vegetarian/vegan cookbooks so that I would not get bored and frustrated with my new lifestyle. Of all of the cookbooks I own, I have been disappointed with many, impressed by some and awed by only one - Vegan with a Vengeance. The recipes are creative, flavorful, and are enjoyed by my meat-eating friends/family as much as by me! Plus, the book covers a lot of ground - from breakfasts/brunches to desserts, soups, sammiches, etc. I love the additional commentary and advice in the book, regardless of the fact that the other and I don't have the same views on many issues! I keep going back to this cookbook frequently and my many others are starting to collect dust. An absolute must have for any vegetarian or vegan library, and highly recommended for anyone else who wants to eat a little healthier and more varied as well.
Yum, yum. November 21, 2005 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
This is an excellent vegan cookbook. Everything I've made from it so far (tempeh sausage crumbles, pumpkin waffles, pumpkin seed crusted tofu with baked pumpkin and cranberry relish, and pumpkin oatmeal cookies) has been great. The recipes are easy to follow and turn out correctly without adjustments. I also have "Garden of Vegan" and the recipes in this book are better - more flavorful, more creative and none of them rely on soy cheese or other highly processed foods. I highly recommend this book for adventurous meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans.
an essential purchase November 9, 2005 8 out of 11 found this review helpful
Isa Moskowitz has written an incredibly user-friendly cookbook with delicious recipes that use real ingredients. It's the best vegan cookbook I own (and I have quite a few). Don't wait - buy a copy now!

This weekend we made: white bean and roasted garlic soup, chickpea and broccoli casserole and roasted applesause. Every one was easy to make and came out perfect.
The writing is great - you could just read the book cover to cover without making a single dish, but why would you want to do that.
