BBQ Joy March 3, 2006 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
It provided some helpful hints and general knowledge but I found the Joy of Cooking to much more comprehensive.
The Barbecue..Bible???? September 20, 2005 4 out of 14 found this review helpful
Ok, Perhaps the recipes are great, but unlike his other books with great illustrations, I might have just picked up a world dictionary that doesn't entise the imagination. Again, the recipes are most likely wonderful, but when it comes to cookbooks, I prefer ones that are visual and tantilizes all my sences when reviewing a meal.
Fire Up the Barbecue! September 1, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
There is no greater pleasure than watching a football or baseball game and having your best buds over for barbecue and some ice cold beer, preferably many ice cold beers.
This book has so many great barbecue recipes and suggestions, it has kept me busy and happy for hours. How to marinate the perfect chicken, for example.
I have my "Kiss the Cook" apron ready for next weekend's big cookout, and my bible by my side.
Really well done August 19, 2005 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is an excellent cookbook that covers the great range of possibilities for grilling food. The recipes are well organized, and the procedures are clearly explained. Particularly enjoyable are some of Raichlen's side notes that give some of the cultural context around the foods. This is a fun book that will make it really easy for you to have even more fun with your grill.
I"ve made about a dozen of the dishes in the book and all have turned out great. The only modifications have been to accommodate personal tastes e.g making something spicier or adding more garlic.
For the reviewers who commented that the recipes are too elaborate or the ingredients too exotic, I can only say "get a grip." There are very few ingredients that aren't easily obtainable, and in those cases Raichlen usually suggests a convenient substitute. The recipes are really easy to execute, most involve little more than chopping, grinding, waiting for things to marinate, and cooking over the grill.
While the book rightly earns its 5 stars, some may argue that it's more about grilling than Barbeque. Barbeque, to many, is low and slow cooking over coals with some dishes requiring 8 hours of more of smoking time. Raichlen's book is mostly about grilling. Personally... whatever.
So many recipes, so little time! August 9, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I really debated about buying this one based on previous reviews, but Dear Hubby and I do enjoy watching Raichlen's Barbecue University on the Food Network so I went ahead and bought. Boy, I'm glad I did - usually I don't use recipes straight out of a cookbook, but I read lots of them and then improvise. Well, I've made two of these verbatim so far and I think it's one of the best barbecue cookbooks I've seen.
We recently bought a smoker and I was hoping for more smoker-type recipes - this book is more about grilling than smoking though. But I know I will be trying out many more of the excellent-sounding concoctions. I also enjoyed the anecdotal notes on world-wide grilling and barbecuing!
