4 out of 5 stars must have for all levels of experience   September 17, 2008
what a treasure trove this book is. The sheer variety of themes is enough to keep any cake maker happy for years. I have found many of the designs transferable to larger cakes when the need arises.

Lots of pictures for reference, easy to read and understand written instructions, and a good selection of recipes.

Not much that I would have changed. SOME of the more complex designs could have used a bit more in the way of step by step pictures, but then, I am a visual learner, so there can never be enough pictures in a book for me.

Thanks to the writers, bakers, testers and stylists, great job, and I look forward to future books from you.

Seek peace

3 out of 5 stars Not too bad   September 15, 2008

Lots of cute ideas and good technique ideas! The ingredients used are easy to find items in your grocery store so no special ingredients to buy. I prefer my stuff a little more homemade but for looks - it's just right.

5 out of 5 stars What a cute book!   September 11, 2008
I had this book on hold at the library for a few months, and I just picked it up yesterday. It was totally worth the wait! I haven't yet made any of the cupcakes, but I am really looking forward to trying them. I love this book so much that it's going on my amazon.com wishlist right now!

5 out of 5 stars Wow!   September 11, 2008
What a darling little book! It is a do-able appproach for those who want to give their kids (grandkids) something real from the kitchen but who aren't necessarliy the kitchen gourmet. Easy directions, product explanations, and pictures make it possible for anyone, cake challenged or not, to become a cupcake hero. Go for it!

4 out of 5 stars Clever but a bit time consuming   September 9, 2008

Clever ideas for outstanding cupcakes--something for everyone in this book from kids to adults. The cupcake decorations do require some searching for materials, but most were candies quite readily available (starbursts, licorice strings, m&ms). The authors do include photos of the items needed, recipes for the actual cakes and which frostings to use and how to do every step of the process. VERY detailed instructions, clear and easy to follow with LOTS of photos. LOVED the designs (animals, faux tv dinners, insects, flowers, gorgeous monarch butterflies, pool balls and bowling pins) and ideas for simpler fare like initials and patterned white designs. No fancy equipment is used--not even a pastry bag; they show you how to use a simple zip top plastic storage bag!
Most designs do require time, however, and require time to round up the necessary items as well as bake and cool cakes, frost them and then the decorating. GREAT concepts, easy instructions and wonderful results--just plan on several hours to decorate unless you are either skilled or artistic (neither of which I am :-).
I recommend this book to all MOMS, Grandmoms and hostesses.
