a creative cookbook that falls short of expectations May 5, 2008 27 out of 31 found this review helpful
This cookbook is unlike any other - it is creative and very fun to look through... However, the majority of the recipes in this book are made from processed foods and not enough clean ingredients.. the recipes also frequently use artifical sweeteners, which have been proven to actually stimulate appetites..
There are a lot of smart and easy to make recipes like Lord of the Onion Rings, and brownie muffins made with pumpkin puree - that will save you tons of calories!! I admit, the onion rings tasted strangely too sweet and looked nothing like the picture, but I loved the brownie muffins made with Pumpkin. I did do a serch online and saw that substitute oil and egg with pumpkin is not uncommon for people who want to eat healthier -- sorry HG, can't give you credit for that one. There are a lot of no brainer "recipes" such as the hamburger recipe which is essentially a boca burger slapped with lettuce, pickles, fat free cheese and an english muffin that consists of light bread, egg beaters, fat free cheese and low cal bacon ---I mean cmon now, is that really even a recipe?
FYI, if you found out about this book through the Hungry Girl website, please note that this book is not a full color cookbook like you would assume from visiting the HG site. There are about 10 pages of pictures in the middle. Weight Watchers points arent included - you'll have to go to the website for that.. But that's better than nothing right?
If you like Hungry Girl but want more recipes made with clean ingredients, be sure to check out the Biggest Loser Cookbook (very simple and clean recipes -- majority of them are low calorie but some are not!!) and the Weight Watchers Cookbook and the Decadent Diet cookbook. I happen to have all 3 of these cookbooks and think they complement each other well =) Sorry HG but your book is going back to the store.
HAPPY (HEALTY) EATING!
For the calorie counting-cooking impaired! May 5, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
First off, I LOVE this book. I am a weight watchers lifetime member that has recently switched to calorie counting so I have been on both sides of the fence, and this book is really for anyone. I haven't cooked a real meal in over 3+ month and as soon as I got this book I spent all Sunday cooking in the kitchen! She makes it so easy for people that really don't have the cooking know-how and all of the substitutes she uses are GENIUS! I really recommend this book to anyone, especially people that want a little change in their normal food routine.
Finally! May 5, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is one of the best "healty" cookbooks I've seen. The recipes are wonderful, fun, and delicious! And best of all, a lot of the recipes serve only 1 person- -it's great! Everyone should try this, it is finally easy to eat healthy!
Everyday Eating At Its BEST! May 5, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I love to eat. Flavor, fun, health, speed, and ease MUST be part of my daily eating. Hungry Girl is smart and wise about eating and this book makes it easy for everyone to be smart and wise about what to eat and how to prepare it. There are now so many alternatives to 700 calorie snacks, 1500 calorie desserts, and 3500 calorie meals in one convenient and affordable book!
This book provides something for everyone - every meal, every occasion, every craving, and every palate. The recipes feed body, mind, and soul and make it simple. Most products and ingredients are easily accessible as well as affordable. Her recipes and insights generate motivation and your own creativity.
The presentation is unbelievably straightforward and clear. The recipes, the entire book, ROCKS!
amazing for people who LOVE FOOD May 5, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
AMAZING BOOK! As an avid email reader of Hungry Girl (free and loaded with tips), I was anticipating this book. With much delight, it meets and surpasses my expectations. The recipes are de-light-ful and really delish! I ate the yummy "ginormous cereal bowl-anza" this morning-almost too much food! It is a practical and useful guide to those who are on weight watchers wanting to mix things up. Many helpful and heathful tips on dining out and making cooking fun and tasty! I would reccomend this to everyone! The "hg's de-pudged pigs in the blanket" was available on the hungry girl website, but it also shows up in the book. It really meets a naughty junk food fix, without actually being naughty :) GO OUT RIGHT NOW AND PURCHASE THIS BOOK!!!! You will use it alot! Ths recipes use ingredients that you should have in your cabinets. It even made me purchase fiber one (I have been dreading that one)-but I feel that it was a really good buy (considering the rising price of food-it had better be!)....You will enjoy this one-promise!
