A Must-Have Wine Reference November 2, 2006 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
The key to this book and how it differentiates itself from the many wine references on the market is the excellent use of geographic and topographic maps. It is in fact an atlas and is true to its name. By having vividly detailed map information for the reader, you begin to understand why various wine regions are held in higher esteem.
Aside from its primary beneift, an astute reader will derive a secondary benefit from these maps. Many chateau and wineries are located on the maps along with their vineyards. For example, while many of you may have heard of famed Chateau Mouton-Rothschild, some of you may not be aware that Chateau Clerc Milon is located adjacent to the property and in fact is owned by Mouton. This wine can be had for a much more reasonable price even though geographically they are very close. This can be also said of Chateaus Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut Brion with their vines interwined (and both owned by the Delon family) but the later an exceptional value comparatively.
Used in conjunction with other wine references this atlas will fill in the geographic gaps many other references leave.
Don't leave home without it September 3, 2006 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Recently, my wife and I went on holiday to the Bordeaux region to tour the vineyards. This book was extremely helpful in planning and executing the trip. As geography and 'terroir' are key to understanding wine, I know of no other book that gives a better overview of this mysterious and elegant beverage. It's a must buy for wine lovers.
Perfect. March 7, 2006 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I'm a wine retailer in Minnesota who has learned to lean heavily on this wonderful book. If one wants comprehensive information about the world of wines, this is like a bible. Because of my job I use it weekly, and consider this work essential.
One could begin this book as a complete novice and become fully competent at understanding the often daunting complexities of wine by its end.
One needn't worry about anything buying this book. It is well worth the money, and you will have a gorgeous reference at your fingertips at all times.
