5 out of 5 stars An Excellent - "Must Have" - Book   August 18, 2001

Everyone should have this book in their collection. Your copy will take pride of place on your bookshelf just like mine has. In it the author not only enlightens you in all the sensible aspects of home brewing theory and practice but he also relays a great sense of humour. He has an excellent no-nonsense, easy to follow writing style. Leon clearly demonstrates the fact that he has been involved in the noble hobby of homebrewing for the better part of a lifetime. His vast experience shines through with his witty and informative narrative. He covers an extensive range of historical, theoretical and practical aspects and the construction of simple and yet very effective home brewing tools, for example cappers, scales and airlocks etc etc. Some topics such as distillation are of course presented purely - as the author warns - for information purposes only as they are illegal in certain parts of the world. Interested? Want to know more? Then buy the book, you definitely won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Alaskan Bootleggers Bible Is GA-A-REAT!!   October 5, 2000

If you have ever thought about homebrewing, or do it now, this is the book for you! Mr. Kania shows his true mastery of the subject. He gives simple, precise instructions on setting up your own home-brewery or winery with lots of simple and rudimentry homemade equipment for the beginner on a budget. This guy is the dang McGuyver of homebrewing and winemaking and he shows you how to be one too!! The book also doesn't just bore you with good information, instructions and drawings. It's full of intresting and comical facts about alcohol through the ages like, 'Horse Tird Whiskey' and a jury that was indicted for drinking the evedence in a moonshine trial. The book even has an intresting section on home distillation (illegal in the U.S. but not all countries).

My third attempt to review what I consider a great read. Subtle humor, coupled with historical data and the feeling of living in outback Alaska all combine to make this instructional manual a great enjoyment whether you brew beer, make wine or distill whiskey. If you do, it takes you throught the processes simply and comprehensively. As one, who doesn't let the sun set on a day that the "Devil's Brew" doesn't touch my lips I give Mr.Kania kudos. I expect many more smoke trails rising over America as this book reaches the masses. Robert J. Emmert, Radio Talk Show Host, Fort Myers, Florida

Just finished Leon Kania's book on home brewing, wine making and distilling. The subtle humor and the history of alcohol use and production makes for an enjoyable read whether you intend to brew or not. Along with the feeling of living in remote Alaska and fending for yourself under difficult conditions, it brings us back to the times when ordering a pizza meant going to the kitchen and kneading some pizza dough, while the kids made the sauce and grated the cheese. As one, who never lets the sun set on a day when I have not tasted the "Devil's Brew", I give Mr. Kania kudos on a great story and manual. I can see many more smoke trails rising over America as this book reaches the masses. Robert J. Emmert, Radio Talk Show Host, Fort Myers, Florida
