Needed more depth... July 10, 2006 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I found the text lacked detail; probably sufficient for sounding clever at dinner parties, but only at a fairly superficial level of understanding. I suspect it has been aimed at the wine novice. For a more authoritative text, I would go for Hugh Johnson's Wine Companion.
Very comprehensive overview of wine July 8, 2006 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
While not an expert by any means, I still learned a lot from this "course". I especially appreciated the coverage of Burgundy and German wine. The book is enjoyable to read, very well organized, succinct and does an amazing job of giving a very comprehensive overview of nearly all of the wine regions and varietals of the world. The sidebars (which can be distracting at times, but worth the effort) are chock full of fascinating information. This book is a must read for the novice and even some more experienced wine lovers.
Outstanding - great background for learning - and wines to try. June 7, 2006 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
Outstanding. A true course in the wines of the world. Helps get over the confusion so many choices present. I tried a Malbec from Argentina I wouldn't have tried without this book - outstanding with beef. Helps take the confusion out of wines in focus without being long or boring. Great list of wines to try by price range - wines you can actually find in the store. Whether you want to spend $15 on a wine or hundred or more, he has what you need to try things with confidence. One of my favorite gift book that I received from a friend.
Great beginners and Great Reference Book. March 11, 2006 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This book is great for beginning wine enthusiast, but it also is very useful for more experienced. The book has wine appreciation at the beginning and then breaks down by regions. It has enough information to get you started and does not overburden the reader with excess information. This book prepares you to then proceed to a more sophisticated wine encyclopedia, atlas or wine bible. The book also provides information of the "Windows on the World restaurant" and some history up to the 2001 catastrophy of the Worlds Trade Center. It is a good wine book and some history provided as well.
Wonderful Resource. A No-brainer choice. March 7, 2006 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
What make's Zraly's book so good is that he cuts to the chase. The relevant information one needs to appreciate the quintessence of a wine are gotten to very quickly.
The vast majority of people-especially those attempting to immerse themselves into the world of wine for the 1st time-do not need superfluous information that will confuse them. The success of Zraly's course is built on that premise.
The course is full of interesting and relevant sidebars to be sure, but as it is patterned after a textbook that information literally is positioned in sidebars.
If you are a wine lover, beginning or seasoned, you will appreciate this book. I sell wine, and thus need a working knowledge of the world of wine and I've found this book invaluable.
Buying this book is a no-brainer.
