we absolutely love this book. it has every drink you can imagine to make.
The best book ever!! January 6, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I'm an aspiring bartender and like most people, I bought other bartender recipe books. But the Bartender's Black Book is the best one. It has some raunchy drink names, some which I can't repeat (LOL) and you have your classic drinks. There are different variations of some, like "Sex on the Beach".
The best thing about this book is that they do not list the brand names! Most books list brand names and this book lets you make the recipe using whatever brand name liquor you want. What is also good about this book is tips for customers who are always trying to get the bartender's attention and how to be a good tipper. Also in the back of the book is a bartender glossary, some terms are funny, some are informative if you are working at a restaurant or a club.
I look forward to the next edition.
Great for bartenders, not great for browsing by ingredient June 19, 2006 6 out of 10 found this review helpful
This book is great for bartenders, as it has about every drink imaginable. If you're looking for something specific, its organized alphabetically making that easy. If you're more casually looking for something to try, based on what you have available in your home bar, for example, its difficult to browse and find something you like. It's all there, its just difficult to find. Organizing the recipes into chapters according to their base would have been more helpful.
Another bartender who loves this book. June 9, 2006 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I own four or five drink recipe books. This is the one that travels with me when I tend bar. I've bought several copies of it over the years -- the single downside of this book is that, if you turn your back on it, one of your fellow bartenders will steal it from you. It's just that good.
It's the most complete drink book I've ever seen. It's easy to use, with drink recipies in a clear, sans-serif font -- in a darkened bar, it can sometimes be a little tricky to read if you're a geezer like me, but I think they did the best possible job of designing the book for use -- a larger font size, and the book would be too bulky to stick in your hip pocket, a smaller one, and even young guys would have trouble reading it.
The cover is water-resistant -- hell, I recently used the sucker as a cutting board to chop up limes. I don't recommend that use, but it survived the treatment. This book takes a beating -- it's been in puddles of beer and vodka, it's had orange juice poured on it, and it lives at the bottom of my bag at all times. I don't treat it nicely, and it treats me great.
There is no better book for a professional. None.
Another user mentioned that it has no pretty pictures. That's true. Because pretty pictures would distract from its primary use -- for a professional bartender to look up an obscure drink while working in a busy bar, in order to find the recipe, make it, and move on to the next customer.

Simply about 2700 drink recipes alphabetically listed, thus easy to find quickly.
