5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Vegan Sweets Cookbook   October 24, 2007
5 out of 6 found this review helpful

Ms. Partick-Goudreau's receipes from this book will exceed any expectations you may have regarding vegan baking even if you are already vegan. Most instructions are simple enough for novice bakers yet the finished products are nothing short of spectacular & delicious. The richly complex & intense flavors offered up by such basics as chocolate chip cookies are mind blowing. Colleen has carefully shaped these receipes in such a way that the elimination of dairy products does not compromise them one bit. The beautiful pictures & high quality of the publication makes it worth owning if only to browse through. This book is a must for any baker at any level.

4 out of 5 stars Great recipes, but   October 23, 2007

There are a lot of wonderful recipes in here, but there's also a really big presence of ener g egg replacer- a product I've never been fond of using in baking because it's a little too... obvious? I always taste it immediately. There are many recipes to choose from in here, but a great deal of them do use the egg replacer, which is the main reason I'm going to stick with "Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World" for now.

That is the wonderful thing about this cookbook though- because while I do love me some cupcakes, there is a wide array of baked goods to choose from in here, much more of a selection than I've seen anywhere else.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have (vegan!!) cookbook   October 21, 2007

This is a one-of-a-kind cookbook! Have you ever wondered how to bake without dairy and eggs? Colleen Patrick-Goudreau shows you how in The Joy of Vegan Baking. With 150 scrumptious recipes and a bounty of gorgeous photographs, this cookbook includes quick breads, yeast breads, cookies, cakes, pastries, cobblers and more. Recipes range from familiar classics (Chocolate Chip Cookies; Bread Pudding; Apple Cobbler) to ethnic fare (Mango with Sticky Rice; Rugelach; Naan). Patrick-Goudreau addresses numerous questions about vegan baking and provides an abundance of helpful tips and commentaries. She is an extremely gifted writer. I found the introductory essay alone to be worth the price of the book.

Appendices include a Guide to Ingredients, Essential Kitchen Tools, Resources and Recommendations--these just for starters--this cookbook actually has 3 indices! Patrick-Goudreau truly demystifies vegan baking. Her book will expand your culinary repertoire and feed your ultimate goal: making friends-and-family favorites that nourish both heart and soul.

5 out of 5 stars Best Vegan Baking Collection ever   October 21, 2007

Being vegan, it's always difficult to find great cookbooks on baking. This collection has everything all in one place from pastries to cookies, candies to pies! Plus, mounds of information on the best egg-replacers, sweeteners, non-dairy milks, and other essential ingredients. The opening chapter is a must-read for anyone wondering "why vegan" is a healthy & ethical choice.

And this book isn't just for vegans! Anyone wuld enjoy these recipes - in fact, I've served many of these sinful treats to family & friends who had no idea they were eating "vegan" food until I told them. I've already loaned this book to my mother who is not vegan but loves the chocolate brownier recipe. Cutting cholesterol? This is a great book of options, as well.

I can't recommend this book enough regardless your motivation - there are great recipes in here no matter how you slice it.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous cookbook!   October 18, 2007

I recently began listening to the author's podcast, which is how I heard about this book. It's really a gorgeous cookbook with many color photos and a terrific layout. I know there are people that criticize cookbooks with lots of photos as fluff, but trust me, this is one of the most comprehensive cookbooks I own. As others have said, there is a *ton* of information on vegan baking, as well as tips scattered throughout the book. The vast majority of ingredients are common and familiar. I am a new vegetarian and there was only one ingredient that was new to me. I was most impressed with the variety of desserts included. Another reviewer already listed the categories so I won't repeat them, but the list is really extensive. I just received the book yesterday so I'll have to amend this review once I've had a chance to do some baking (the lemon bars are at the top of my list), but I'm already hoping the author will create future cookbooks for all types of dishes!!

Update: I promised an update once I had tried some recipes--yum! I've made the chocolate chip cookies, the lemon bars, the apple pie with the flaky pie crust, the pumpkin pie with the pecan crust, the light lemon bundt cake, the blueberry orange bundt cake, the lemon cheesecake, and...my favorite...the German apple cake. From the ingredients, the cake doesn't appear to be anything out of the ordinary, but it certainly is. I couldn't get enough. The chocolate cake (with her chocolate frosting) was the best I've had--moist, "chocolatey", light and fluffy.

In response to the comment on my original post, I wanted to add that while the quality of the recipes are obviously an important part of any cookbook, other characteristics are important too. Is it easy to read? Do the recipes use easy-to-find ingredients? Is the layout attractive? Am I, as the reader, given "bonus" information above and beyond the recipes? The answer to all of these for the Joy of Vegan Baking is yes!!
