Good book for your collection March 3, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have tried several of the basic recipes in this book and found them to be easy to follow and good to eat! I hope that one day I have time to try some of the decorating! The directions are clear and seem easy to follow.
Hmmm... February 28, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Well I read the reviews and I favored those that gave great reviews, but not without some serious thought to those that had issues with some of the recipes as it is just as important to me that recipes work.
The ideas and finished product are fabulous as is the lists and decorating techniques that are covered early on. But the recipes.....I don't know.
I've made both of the cookies recipes and while I finally figured out the vanilla one (I've got better in my arsenal), I never could quite grasp what needed to change in the chocolate one. It had an odd texture and even stranger flavor once I got past the fact that that recipe wasn't going to produce a nice firm cookie that would hold it's shape during baking.
I'm wondering if, like many artists I know, including myself, if these recipes came about after the fact and after prompting for something materialistic. If that is true, the science that that is so important to successful baking was complete disrespected.
I will keep this book because I am quit impressed and appreciate the artistry and executed decorating techiques. However I will use recipes from bakers I've come to trust and respect because of their consistent workable successful formulas.
Beautiful Pictures but not good recipes. January 28, 2008 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
The cookbook has beautiful pictures, quite well done and the pages are a nice glossy finish. That's why I gave it 2 stars. Otherwise the recipe content is very lacking. The recipes don't seem accurate to me. I tried making the red velvet cake and after adding 2 cups of oil and a 1 1/4 c. of buttermilk it was just a wet mess. There was 3 1/2 c. of flour but something just wasn't turning out right. I wasted a lot of money on this recipe because it also calls for 1 lb of sugar! ouch, quite pricey to just dump in the garbage. The other recipe I made was the white cake and baking for one hour was a bit too much. I wish I'd read the other reviews first. And the chocolate cake tasted like grape cough syrup. If you're thinking about buying this book, check it out at the library first. Unless you're a professional baker the cost of these recipes and all the costly colorings, baubles, and such you'd have to buy you're better off just calling a professional from the start! Don't recommend for the mom with kids, there weren't any really cute cakes for kids. These were cakes/cookies in the shape of slippers and purses, and you needed 8 pounds of fondant! geez.
The best cakes you could make!!! December 17, 2007 Ever since i started baking Elisa's recipes i've been hooked! Her cake flavors are one of a kind. The vanilla is my personal favorite although the banana and red velvet are competing for that honor. I truly love this book!!! Not only Elisa writes the recipes in a way that are easy to read, understand and mix for the home baker but she also uses weight measurements for us professional pastry chefs. The recipes are also very easy to bake in large quantities since she gives you the volume for 9" pans and 1/2 sheets. I strongly recommend this book!
Gorgeous book, but inaccurate recipes November 24, 2007 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is indeed a gorgeous book. But, like another reviewer, those that have given it 5 stars have only looked at the book and not baked from it. I made the vanilla and chocolate cakes for a birthday party. The instructions for baking the vanilla 9-inch cakes are obviously inaccurate as they say to bake the layers for 1 hour when, in fact, it should be more like 35 minutes. Luckily I bake a lot and knew there had to be a problem. The vanilla cake was okay. We all liked the chocolate cake, but it has a much denser texture than most I make from scratch. The sugar cookie recipe is totally inaccurate. It had at least twice the flour in it as it should have. I tried to rescue the dough, but with very little success.
The pictures are gorgeous and she is truly a talented designer, but it would have been a really good idea to have tested the recipes after they were printed...at least had them proofed several times as there are several inaccuracies.
