Get ideas perhaps, but don't bother with the recipes! April 27, 2008 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I have to agree with those who rated this book on the low end. Elisa Strauss is a great decorator; however, the recipes are totally inaccurate. The cake recipes make more than you need, and the bake times are off for the baker at home. For example, I tried making cupcakes once, and ended up with more like 40 cupcakes - NOT the 24 the recipe supposedly makes. I'm no novice in the kitchen, especially at baking. The buttercream recipe was off also, and way, way, way too sweet to even top a cake! It's pure sugar-tasting and it was just gross. I also agree with the comments on the cookie recipe--inaccurate and the flour is much too much than what is required for the recipe. Maybe she will write another book with better, TESTED recipes--that is, not tested in large quantity in a professional kitchen, but at home.
Bottom line: if you want to look at the cake pictures (most of which don't even seem worth the time because they are too done up to be edible, and don't really taste that good with the loads of fondant on them) for ideas, don't bother getting this book. I think people who rated 5 stars did not use recipes from the book. So, just borrow it from the library and make notes on the ideas instead of spending the cash.
Great for inspiration and practical hints April 22, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I stumbled across this book in a book store. I'd never heard of the author before nor had I seen her work. The book itself is gorgeous. Big colorful pages add a lot of inspiration. I am not new to baking and therefore have my old standby recipes. For that reason, I don't buy cake decorating books for their recipes, but rather for techniques, hints, construction ideas. This book has that in spades. The author shows in a few photos what would take pages to describe. I was able to make a near perfect gumpaste rose after seeing her step by step process. Overall this is a great book for anyone interested in cake decorating or for anyone who wants a fabulous coffee table book.
If you're looking for recipes, maybe it's best to look elsewhere. If you want helpful hints, good advice and great photos, start here.
Great Book !! March 25, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Great book, whether to replicate designs or for inspiration. Beautiful pictures of cakes, cupcakes and cookies. The designs range in complexity, with easy to follow instructions. Would recommend for experienced/intermediate decorators, and for beginners looking to start a new hobby!

This book is wonderfully written. Every part of cake decorating is constructed and is easy to follow. The ideas and cakes created in the book are awesome.
