Very Creative Cupcakes July 30, 2005 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I am accustomed to doing all of my cake baking with the Cake Mix Doctor and Chocolate from the Cake Mix Doctor, so my expectations for this book were very high. One major gripe: Byrn's 2 Cake Doctor books have a photo of every single recipe. Cupcake Doctor contains relatively few...this was a huge disappointment to me as I like to have a mental picture of what my results should look like. I don't think I will use this book quite as much as the other two for that very reason. On the other hand, the recipes are creative and tasty, as usual. The capuccino chip cupcakes are outstanding. I look forward to trying more of the recipes for my daughter's birthday parties, school bake sales, etc.
Not impressed July 24, 2005 0 out of 12 found this review helpful
I was not impressed with the book. It's lacking in photos (especially color ones) The recipes arent that great either. Who would stick cookie dough in a cupcake batter?
Found a mistake on the first recipe, not enough pictures, but enjoying it, Too! July 5, 2005 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I agree with the review about them "skimping" on the pictures. The first 2 books have very inviting pictures, this one forces you to use your imagination more. I made the S'mores cupcakes and thought the frosting was terrible, it never set-up (or at least not in the 20 minutes stated in the book), the Cappucino Cupcakes were great and the chococlate cream cheese cupcakes were very rich (loved by chocolate lovers), however, there are Hershey bars listed in the ingredients, but not mentioned in the method, so I wasn't exactly sure where to add them, so I added them at the end.
cake mix doctor strikes again May 20, 2005 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
I love this book. I have all Anne Byrn's Doctor books and use them all the time. Now my family and friends think I know how to cook. No longer do coarse, stale birthday cakes haunt my kitchen counter. Cupcakes are so cool and trendy. I love that they are no longer confined to kids and the classroom. I made those molten chocolate ones with genache and thought we'd gone to Jean Georges in New York City for dinner!
Lots of Great Recipes & Ideas May 20, 2005 This is a great collection of cupcake (and also muffin) recipes, with some really good ideas on how to turn out fantastic cupcakes. The tips and hints throughout the book are also really helpful, for instance offering ideas on what can and can't be substituted in the recipes. On the negative side, I thought there could have been more colour pictures of what each cupcake looked like when finished, as only a handful of the cupcakes are featured in colour in the front of the book. Also, if you are like me and live outside the US, be prepared to find that some packages of things like cake mix and instant pudding (which are the basis of most of these recipes) are different weights than those called for in the book.
