Great book for those almost-homemade-but-not cupcakes December 21, 2007 I'll start by saying I've only made one recipe from this book so far, so that's what my review is based off of. It was the "best" birthday cupcake recipe with the chocolate syrup icing. But it was GOOOOOOOD.
I've recently become slightly obsessed with this whole cupcake craze and initially wanted to bake them all from scratch (I had, of course, perfected the out-of-the-box cupcake already). I tried two recipes - peanut butter cupcakes and Paula Deen's red velvet cupcakes. To help describe this experience, I will tell you that my boyfriend took one bite of my peanut butter cupcake and exclaimed, "This is probably the worst cupcake I've ever had in my life!" Nice, I know. My from-scratch cupcakes were dry, the tops became crusty shortly after they came out of the oven, and sorry Paula, but your red velvet was floury tasting and not-so-hot.
So, I thought, what harm could this "cake mix doctor" really do to my diminishing self-esteem when it came to my baking skills? Well, if this birthday cupcake is anything to judge the book by, it's AMAZING. The cupcake was moist and tasty and had enough additions to it that it didn't scream, "I came from a BOX!" The chocolate syrup frosting (I used Hersheys) was DEE-lish, too. It tasted even better after the cupcakes were in the fridge overnight, because it took on sort of a fudge-like consistency. My co-workers devoured them and even those who normally aren't cupcake fans (what?!?!) thought they were fab. I'm trying the red velvet recipe this weekend to take to Christmas.
So my advice is this. Buy the book, follow her recipes, and enjoy yourself a great cupcake!
Creative fun! December 18, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Great book filled with many creative ideas. The recipes provided are geared towards a large age group. It's as good as her other books.
great cakes September 29, 2007 I bought this Cake Doctor book as a gift for I have used mine, many times to bake some great cakes and wanted to share the book.
If you like the Cake Doctor, you'll like this September 4, 2007 I wish this book had more pictures of the finished cupcakes, but it is still a good cookbook. This will give you different cupcakes to make or inspire you to try your own ideas. So far everything I've tried in this book is delicious.
If you bake cupcakes - you NEED this book! July 21, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bake cupcakes "all" the time! and I use the recipes in this book - with fantastic results! My family and friends rave about the taste of the cupcakes and because of Anne's recipes I am seen as a great baker (and I love that!). You start with a basic cake mix (stock up when they are on sale) - and add ingredients to make it unique and more flavorful. The ideas are creative and unique - and sometimes old favorites. Did I say that I love this book!? I have also found that when using Anne's "formula" I can successfully create my own recipes when adapting "from scratch" recipes. Thank you Anne!
