3 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS FOR NON-FICTION AUTHORS!   June 11, 2008

While the information in this book is useful, it is specifically aimed at non-fiction authors. In addition, NF authors aiming at the mainstream - NY top 10, Oprah etc. Much of the book is given over to the NF NY Top 10 game, sadly.

Authors like myself, who neither wish to write NF or subscribe to the the tiresome values of the mainstream - instead, wishing to write literature or fringe work - will be severely disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars It's all you need   February 27, 2008
I'm often asked what one needs to do to get a book published and I always point to this book. In fact I order several for myself to pass out to friends.

5 out of 5 stars Author 101: Bestselling Book Proposals   October 19, 2007
I admit it. I am a multiply published author and I still hate writing book proposals. For me, trying to get that letter to illustrate the best of me and my ideas without writing an entire dissertation is challenging.

Author 101: Bestselling Book Proposals is billed as a crash course in publishing success. The book is one of a series of books made for the Author 101 program. The authors have both published multiple bestselling books. Since they work in the publicity industry, they have some great insider knowledge on what really happens when you send that proposal.

This information contained in this book is invaluable. Anyone even considering writing a book should pick up a copy. The authors take the want-to-be writer through the submission process. They stress that writing is a business. Publishing companies are in the business to make money. You may have the greatest idea, the most well written novel, or the book that will end world hunger but if only your mother is going to buy a copy you don't have a chance. Your only chance at publication is to know what the publisher is looking for, knowing who will buy your book, and being ready to put in the effort needed to be successful.

2 out of 5 stars Super Hype   June 26, 2007

Not nearly the book I expected. It's suggestions are ones you can read in any number of "how to" books. A real disappointment

5 out of 5 stars The Book Proposal Manual.   January 8, 2007

Just like their other books Rick Frishman and Robyn Freedman Spizman give you the best crash course in publishing success. If you are planning to write a book proposal, you CANNOT afford not to read this book and follow the tips and techniques that are clearly outlined for you. If you are an author who is about to deal with publishers, buy this book, read it and take notes, follow the advice and you are on your way. If you seriously want to increase your chances of obtaining a publishing contract, this book is a must have. You can write the greatest book ever, but then have a poorly presented proposal and your book and your proposal can languish at the bottom of a publishers pile of the many books and proposals they receive every day. Don't let this happen to you or your book! Get your book out there!
