Don't Assume March 14, 2004 2 out of 31 found this review helpful
This book, although it contains the occasional helpful hint, makes the dangerous assumption that the College "Mom" only has an interest in her child's nutrition, laundry, and other areas of the "female domain."I am apalled that this book, and its companion, was written in the 21st century! In our household, it's Mom who has the tool kit, not dad. Furthermore, it is an outrage to assume that the financial planning is not something that should be jointly managed by both parents. Don't waste your money. It's trash.
A great reference, not just for the youth January 20, 2004 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I got myself a copy of this book after deciding to get one as a gift for a young niece headed off to college. This book has tons of useful (and money saving!) tips - including simple "recipes" for household cleaners, laundry information, how to choose produce, and basic recipes so even people who supposedly don't cook will be able to have a nice meal instead of Dominos night after night. This is a great, simple, and very useful book.
New Brides or College Students! June 23, 2003 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I got this book when I left home several years ago and it was invaluable. My brother just graduated high school and is preparing to go to college, and this was one of his gifts. Particularly for many boys who may not have learned much about basic cooking, laundry, stain removal...It's a must-have!
Where was the BOOK when I needed it? =o) September 22, 2002 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
This book is absolutely amazing! It's the book I have always needed. I only wish I had gotten it when I was first on my own. I have only been "on my own" ( and married with my own house now ) for 4 years, and have learned a lot of hard lessons by experience... but this book has taught me a lot more! If I'd had it to begin with maybe I wouldn't have had to go through some of those hard lessons. This book can never take place of a wonderful Mom, but for some people it will probably be the mother they never had. Everything in it is simple and easy, it's got tons of yummy looking easy recipes, tons of tips for EVERYTHING, and even has a section on health, like what vitamins do what for your body, and what foods you can find them in, as well as a bunch of nutrition tips. I would DEFINATELY reccomend this book for anyone just starting out on their own, and even those who have been on their own for a long time, because there's so much information in this book that even the veteran "on-their-own'ers" could learn a thing or two!
Fun, simple ways to survive if you aren't a chef! July 30, 2002 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
I love this book! Many of the recipes are for plain/simple foods, which is perfect for me. I really like that this ring-bound book lies flat or props easily in a bookrest for easy reading/access.There are some fancier dishes but there's equal time given to basics - how to boil eggs, time pasta, etc. This would be a great gift for someone who doesn't really like to cook but finds themselves having to more than they might think.
