Great Book August 1, 2004 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I orginally learned about this book from College 101: The Book Your College Does Not Want You To Read, as it was recommended by the author, Guy Stevens. I purchased Kathryn's book and gave it my stamp of approval. Originally I was going to give the book to my grandson as part of his graduation gift. Instead I kept the book for myself and have used some of the recipes. My grandchildren adore the recipe for Bacon & Cheese Waffles! (page 77) Oh and the Gingerbread Waffles are delicious!
Life Saving Book with the WRONG TITLE July 9, 2004 47 out of 47 found this review helpful
The worst thing I can say about this book is the title. They completely missed their market when they titled this book "Where's Mom when I need her". While marketing to a college student may seem smart it is only a small piece of the market this book should have targeted. In reality this book is the most aptly targeted to the stay at home mom who is trying to live frugally and save money. Many moms out there are buying books such as "Miserly Meals" and "Tightwad Gazette" in an attempt to find ways to save money and make simple meals for their family. Also many of us did not grow up learning to bake from scratch and how to make our own mixes for things. This book is actually the best one out there for that purpose. It should have had the word Frugal in the title or Cheap/Inexpensive and it should have been marketed more for the moms than the kids. I bought this book years ago as a young mom because my mother never taught me these things. We never learned how to cook or bake or any of those things. This is absolutely hands down the only book you will ever need for saving money and learning the basics of baking, cooking. Excellent book. Editors totally dropped the ball on who to market to and probably lost the author untold dollars as a result but nevertheless the book is amazing!!!
Very simple and helpful June 17, 2004 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
The book speaks for itself. I have learned so much from this book. Everything is very simple and informative. Once again, the book speaks for itself, so I'll let it do just that. Just buy it!
Good beginner's book May 23, 2004 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I picked this up at a used bookstore and love it, though I wish I had the ring-bound version instead. It's great for beginners and although I'm far from a beginner now, i still find myself consulting it because it's a quick easy reference for a recipe template that I can play around with later (for example, quiche, muffins, baked chicken, etc.). It's not as bulky as my beloved "Betty Crocker" but it still has a pretty decent variety of recipes.I give it only 4 stars for three reasons. 1) The non-ring bound version doesn't hold up (or stay open) well. 2) There are no pictures or charts 3) Sometimes info is difficult to find on basic cooking times. Otherwise this is a great book and highly recommended. Oh and as for the guy/gal reviewer who criticized it for being sexist, grow up. It's a catchy title, and the author is only playing to her audience. At least she is wise enough to realize that women DO need to deal with finances. (Years ago many women were left in the dark about such things-- my grandmother couldn't even write a check!). I applaud Ms. Frandsen for including a little bit of everything. Besides, you'll note that the presumed readers of the book are BOTH male and female-- we ALL need to know how to cook (and repair things) these days!
Excellent book for people who have a sense of humor May 11, 2004 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
A well written book on basic survival skill for young adults away from home. Filled with recipes and ideas for household products. May offend people who need to grow up, though. Recommened
