this book is great because it's compact and has all the info you could ask for involving documentation, grammar, etc.worth the price!

5 out of 5 stars Not for me   November 11, 2006

Ordered this for my sister, not for me. She needed it for a class. It came pretty fast.

4 out of 5 stars Handy little guide   August 25, 2006

Pretty nifty actually if a bit pricey for the size. Spiral bound, nicely presented, small enough to fit in a computer bag or purse. It has a section on clarity (tightening sentences, etc.), grammar, punctuation, and mechanics (capitalizing, abbreviating, etc.). There is also a big section on research paper styles, including MLA, APA, and Chicago. Nice layout, clear type, color coded page edges so you can find your section easier. (I've added some sample pictures I scanned of the pages.)

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because of the quality of the cover. Since it is spiral bound it is a bit flimsy. It would be nice if it had a heavier cover to give it some resistance to damage.

5 out of 5 stars A Quick, Reliable resource! Two Thumbs Up!   July 2, 2006

This is a wonderful little resource book that is a must-have addition to any student's backpack. As a graduate student who, in my undergrad days, studied journalism and mass communication as a minor, I have been exposed to a good number of writing styles and their respect style books. What is nice about this volume is the concise nature.

Hacker presents not only one style, but the three most-used styles (MLA, APA, and my favorite, Chicago). While this is by no means exhaustive, it does provide a guide to the most frequently cited forms of publication. If you are a full-time student, I recommend purchasing the full version of your preferred or required style. However, have this in your bag too!

I recommend this book to all who have to write papers.

5 out of 5 stars A great book to have   April 28, 2006

My first college class required this and it is the only book that I have kept. I use it in every class that I have to write a paper in. My wife also uses it for her classes. I recommend this for any student.
