Better Than the First December 30, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The first book in this series, The Darkest Night, was average. I continued with this, the second book, in hopes that the series would improve--and I was much rewarded. The background and circumstances already having been established, Showalter is able to deliver a much more compelling love story.
The Plot:
Lucian is the keeper of the Demon Death, and is forced to escort the souls of the dead to either heaven or hell. He is commanded by the Titan king Cronus to kill the goddess of Anarchy, Anya. Anya has been stalking Lucian for some time by this point, finding herself fascinated by him. Her past is marked by a curse and a secret gift from her father, making her existence treacherous and complicated. But her attraction for Lucian, and his for her, quickly overshadows all of that.
The Best Bits:
Lucian is a fascinating, complex, sexy character. The theme of Death is equally fascinating. Anya is the exact opposite of the typical fainting, helpless, virginal heroine. She is pushy, destructive, and fun. Their love story is hot and romantic.
Why I Lost a Star:
The biggest problem with this book, like The Darkest Night, is pacing. The plot is well thought out but drags in some places, particularly at the beginning, then skips ahead rapidly as if in a hurry to finish. To me this is likely an issue of poor outlining on the authors part. It does not detract much from the romance, but it makes the tension level awkward.
I recommend this book to anyone who read the first--whether you liked it or not--because it is a huge improvement on the Lord of the Underworld universe.
10 stars!!! December 23, 2008 I absolutely love this book and the Lords of the Underworld series. Prior to reading this, I had never read a book by Gena Showalter. I am so happy I discovered her work. I have since read the other two books in the series, and can hardly wait for the fourth one. I won't go into detail because everyone else has done a superb job of that, but suffice it to say this is a marvelous series.
Ashleys review for the darkest kiss December 14, 2008 Wow,i was blown away by this book i couldn't even put it down!this book takes you on a wild adventure as two "people" try to find away to eliminate the obstacles they come across!
OMG! This book is incredible! A MUST read! December 1, 2008 This book is absolutely amazing!! A definite must read for all of you who like Greek mythology, gods and goddesses, or paranormal romance. Lucian, dealer of Death, houses the Demon of Death inside him as punishment for opening Pandora's box. Being the dealer of Death, Lucian's job is to deliver souls to either the pearly gates of heaven or the fiery pits of hell. Knowing that he can never love because he might someday be called to deliver her soul, Lucian makes sure that he will never appeal to a woman again, or so he thinks. Anya, the goddess of Anarchy and disorder is captivated by Lucian and follows him where ever he goes. Finally showing herself to him, she tries to win him over but to no avail since Lucian believes she is messing with him because no one would find him attractive. After their first encounter, Cronus appears to Lucian demanding Anya's death or he'll make his friends suffer. Thus begins the game of tag between the two, since he does not really want to kill her because he is attracted to her and much to his amazement she does not give up her quest to win him over. In the end, he must decide who is more important to him or find another way to make the Lord Titan happy without losing all that he loves. This is an incredible book, the sex is sizzling! This book captures your attention and you love the characters instantly! The characters make you laugh, wrench your heart, and turn you on! Nothing less than 5 stars for this fabulous book! A definite must read!!! Kudos to Gena Showalter for writing such a great book!
Loved it! November 11, 2008 Great couple and story, if you like interfering gods and pretty hot love scenes. Anya was portrayed like a typical silly, immature goddess (just read those old Greek legends where the gods behave like 5 year olds and throw tantrums when they don't get what they want), which perfectly fit here. Still she was spunky and sacrificed a lot in order to save Lucien. A great read!
