The love, joy, and mystery of the Eucharist April 13, 2008 One of the charms of Father Pennington's books is the fact that he writes about such deep and sacred mysteries in such a simple loving way. This book on the Eucharist is no exception. In it he covers every part of the Mass and reminds all of us who go to Mass regularly about the importance of small things which make all the difference: taking the time to enjoy the beauty of our church; pausing after the readings to pick a phrase, thought, or idea to carry with us; being truly present to those around us during the exchange of the peace. He makes these suggestions while also imparting the facts of the history of the Eucharist (both in East and West) and the reasons for liturgical reform. Father Pennigton closes by recommending that we ask ourselves the nightly question: How was what I received at the Eucharist shared today? Was I a sacrament of the love and compassionate care of Christ? This book is warmly recommended to all who want to make the most of their lives in Christ both at Mass and beyond.
The Eucharist, wine of faith, bread of life April 4, 2000 12 out of 15 found this review helpful
I have found this book to be more basic and tutorial of what is church, church bells, etc.as in earlier Chapters. This would be a book for new converts to the Roman Catholic Church. If one is searching for a deeper love and meaning as the title indicates,The Eucharist, wine of faith and bread of life, one would need to search elsewhere. Basil Pennington is an excellent author, and has written many wonderful inspiring books, but this book lacks going beyond basics and tutorial, it reads like is bit Pre Vatican II and not as revised for the person in the year 2000 searching for a deeper and closer realtionship in the Eucharist.
