Not as accessible as I'd hoped January 28, 2008 3 out of 9 found this review helpful
My eleven-year-old son loves Alton Brown's TV show, so I bought this book for him, hoping it would be as accessible as the show. Unfortunately, the text is aimed more at grown men, and there isn't enough in the way of graphics/aparatus/pictures/etc. to hold the attention of an eleven-year-old boy.
Very Helpful and Easy To Understand January 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this as a holiday gift for my husband because he loves to watch the tv show. It helps you really understand the basics of cooking and things you can easily pay attention to--and help you become a better cook. The cute little magnets in the back, showing the different cuts of meat, are very helpful too.
I'm Just Here For the FOOD January 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This isn't the normal cook book for someone who is looking for normal recipies off his show. Instead this is written in a text book fashion. It explains different techniques in cooking step by step down to a science.
By far this is one of the best books on cooking I have ever picked up. It has built my confidence and enhanced my cooking ability. People looking to buy this book should look at "I am just here for MORE FOOD" where he goes into baking principles.
Gotta Love Alton! January 21, 2008 This book is by far my husband's favorite. He absolutely idolizes Alton Brown and this book has an endless amount of great information and advice. Plus, it contains some delicious recipes as well.
The best cookbook I own January 19, 2008 I can't say enough good things about Alton Brown and this book. It is my "go-to" book for almost all types of cooking (except baking--for that one, check out Brown's I'm Just Here For MORE Food). Brown takes his time to tell you why your food behaves the way it does while cooking. The book doesn't have hundreds of recipes like some books do, but the ones that are there are very, very good. As in, you could only cook the recipes out of this book and you'd be the envy of the family. It's fun to read, there's tons of great info, and the recipes rock. I also think it says a lot about an author to write a cookbook with absolutely no photographs of food in it. You've got to be brave to put out a cookbook with no pictures (except illustrations), and I think Alton Brown succeeds with flying colors. Let me end with this: I've never read any other cookbook from cover to cover before. And I read this one twice!
