great Martha book January 1, 2008 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is a great book. Very Martha. I couldn't wait to get it (but had to since someone told me that it was coming for a Christmas gift so I couldn't buy it!) Too bad I didn't have it before the holidays, as I could have used it plenty in preparation for Christmas dinner.

This cookbook is extremely useful, as long as you know how to use it. The index is straightforward and helpful, whether you have one or both of the snazzy new cookbooks. The recipes are fabulous, but just keep in mind that some are for casual everyday meals, while others are much more complicated and require a bit more experience to make. I think the book works well, giving less adept cooks new things to try out, while also giving challenges to more advanced and adventurous cooks. The cooking "necessities" lists in the front are helpful and presented well, and the layout of the book makes it easy to locate the recipes you need and their accompaniments.
there are two volumes December 23, 2007 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
there are two volumes for this book...hence some people's confusion regarding the index...it seems clear to me, some are in blue and some in black(those recipes are found in the orange volume)
Big Blue Disappointment December 20, 2007 10 out of 33 found this review helpful
I was so excited to see this book, I didn't think to read through it before I bought it. I wish I had because it would have been quickly returned to the shelf. Too many recipes are improperly indexed which makes the whole book quite useless. Said recipes are no where to be found even after reading and rereading entire sections several times.
I'm sure the recipes that are properly indexed are fine, but often call for specialty ingredients. Normally I wouldn't mind a special trip to the store but I'm usually so frustrated after trying to find a recipe I'm out time and we have to settle for a dinner of dry toast.
The layout, photos, and organization weren't really what I would expect from a Martha Stewart publication either. Why would you have green chile on the same page as coffee cake? I've never been so disappointed or irritated. This is my first Martha Stewart book, so I'm hoping the others are better but I will probably refrain from even looking at them because this book has scared me for life. I may never cook again. Please save your money and pass on this book just refer to the Martha Stewart website, or just call mom which is what I've started doing.
