There is no love sincerer than the love of food. - George Bernard Shaw January 9, 2008 18 out of 19 found this review helpful
Somewhere in the past year or two I have developed a real yen for scones. We used to have a tea house and various coffee houses in my city that served them, and I would occasionally buy one when the mood hit. Then all of a sudden my city was sconeless. I couldn't get a scone to save my life. I drove to every coffee place and bakery I could find... nothing. So I decided I'd make my own. I added this book to my Amazon wish list and my husband bought it for me for Christmas. Since Christmas I have been a scone making machine. As I type the air is filled with the heavenly aroma of fresh out of the oven Apple Oatmeal Scones.
I have made several of the recipes and everyone has been easy to follow and wonderfully delicious.
Table of Contents: Metric and Imperial Conversions Introduction: Ensconced in Scones Sweet Scones (examples: chocolate chip orange, gingerbread, raspberry filled almond) Savory Scones (examples: hearty grain, potato bacon, rye caraway) Spreads (examples: curd, clotted cream, maple butter) The Perfect Tea (the authors guide you through some tea time etiquette and ideas) Index
A few of my favorite recipes:
Blueberry Coffee Cake Scones - it has a streusel topping Cheese Scones - Cheddar and Parmesan cheese with a dash of red pepper. I served it with chili one night. Apple Oatmeal Scones - with apples, dates, oatmeal and molasses it's a hearty scone and a great on the go breakfast. Citrus Curd - I love lemon curd and this recipe takes it to another level with a bit of orange juice and peel.
The recipes call for you to place the scone batter on a buttered 8-9 circle on a cookie sheet, then cut the scones yourself, then bake, and if necessary re-cut. I also received a scone pan for Christmas and I would highly recommend it. The baking temperature and time does not change and the amount of batter is perfect for the pan.
My only gripe about this book is its size, about 5 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches, and the binding; it's next to impossible to keep the page open face up. I like my cook books to be able to remain open for easy access. Other than that this is a fantastic little book and I plan to keep on making a scone a day. NordicWare Scottish Scone/Cornbread Pan
Battered Book Demonstrates Years of Appreciation October 19, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My friend laughed at the cocoa smeared on the recipe for brownie scones and the years of love expressed by other ingredients throughout the book. I've owned and used this book for nearly 20 years... a testament to its timelessness and excellence.

I gave my sister this as a gift and she absolutely loves it. Many of the recipes do not require the use of a scone pan so one does not have to make this additional purchase. The recipes are also very easy to follow and contain ingredients that many people already have on hand in their cupboard. A must for anyone who wants to start to bake and enjoy the delight of scones....
eating good January 3, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
so far, have only made a few of the recipes in this tiny, but very full book. And all have come out just fine! Even my Irish Mother-in-Law found NO fault with the Irish Soda Bread scones. This pursuit of scones started because my sweetie fell in love with a local bakery's cherry scones, and while there is no recipe in here for cherry scones, I just made the buttermilk scones with dried cherries and he gobbled them down. No better compliment!
Most of what we've found locally have been cookie like and he likes cakey textured scones (so do I). Here the recipes specially say which ones are cookie like.
This is a tiny book, but as most reviews state, lots of good tasty treats! BUT this NOT for those who are looking to CUT their calories!
a good gift item March 3, 2006 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
The book seems to be good, although I was taken aback when I saw how tiny (literally) the book actually is... It seems like a nice book to put in a gift basket with cooking items and ingredients for scones - which I have decided to do for a friend.
