Need some help assembling monkey bread? German chocolate cake? Chocolate eclairs? Want to learn how to make scones? Just open your Family Baking Book and follow the pictures and step-by-step directions.
There are more than 700 kitchen-tried recipes with 800 step-by-step photos. America's Test Kitchen has supplied us a great resource. There are pages of helpful information about different products at the beginning. Inside the front cover there are some emergency substitutions. The massive amount of time and precision required to produce this book is astonishing.
Don't be surprised that I like this cookbook. Most people who like cookbooks like many for different purposes. There is no such thing as cookbook disloyatly. Nobody every has all the cookbooks he or she needs. This one is a definitive book of baking. It would be a joy to give and a joy to receive.
A Great Big Great Baking Book October 8, 2008 For those of you who know me or have followed my reviews you know that I review a lot of cookbooks, that I spend a good part of my time each year living on a sailboat in the Caribbean, that I love to cook, that I consider myself somewhat of a gourmet chef. If you've looked at my Amazon "So You'd Like to Guides" you know that I like to post some of my favorite recipes. So when I got the chance to get and review this book, I leapt at the chance.
I've got quite a collection of cookbooks and a lot of them, like this one, are pretty hefty tomes. I've got a lot of baking books and this is as good as any of them. Also, before my hubby Dub and I went to the Caribbean for the first time, I typed about a bazillion recipes into my old PowerBook. You can bake on a boat, I do it all the time.
I'm sad to say that I've never seen the TV show. We don't watch the tube in our house. We're readers -- newspapers, books, magazines and for me cookbooks, always cookbooks -- so I'm only talking about the book here, not the TV program.
First off navigating through the book is easy peasy, finding what you want in the sixteen chapters is a piece of cake and you'll be finding lots of cake in this book -- bundt cakes, pound cakes, chocolate cakes, wedding cakes, even cup cakes -- cakes, cakes, cakes, but then can you ever have too much cake? No, no I say.
Wanna make a pizza pie or an apple pie crust, look no further, it's here, souffles, too. Cookies and brownies, you've come to the right place. And, of course, if it's bread you want to bake, then this is the book for you.
Did I say it's heavy, it is, so it can't come to the boat, because Dub and I have a very simple rule, you can bring on whatever you want, but you have to take off something of equal size and weight and I sure don't want to jettison my scuba tank. Still, I've already typed a few of the recipes into my aging iBook (PowerBook died). Because I sure love to bake at sea. Also, there is nothing better then the smell of fresh bread when you're anchored off a deserted island. The sea air mixed with the smell of fresh baked bread, ah, there is nothing better than that.

The Only Baking Book You'll Ever Need October 8, 2008 This ring bound book is stuffed full of the kind of baking recipes my mama loved to cook. If you're a wannabe baker, look no farther than this book. You'll find more than 700 recipes from simple breads to fancy cakes. The recipes are pretty straightforward and easy to follow. I was even able to make pie dough from scratch. No mean feat for me. And my bread rises, that's new for me.
To get an idea of the kind of recipes in this book, take a gander at the sixteen chapter titles: 1. Baking Basics, 2. Bakeware and More, 3. Quick Breads and Muffins, 4. Breakfast and Brunch, 5. Who knew there were so many ways to bake a cake? Well, my mama knew and now I do too. What a great big baking book this is.
Comprehensive Baking Book--good for beginners! October 8, 2008 I got a lot more than I expected when this book arrived at my doorstep!!! I truly have no bad things to say about it. Here's why I like it: - Recipes in the book in a binder format, so when baking you can pull out one recipe and you don't have to deal with the entire cumbersome book on your counter. -Recipes are well-organized. -A *huge* variety of recipes, from pizza to cakes and everything in between. -Pictures!!!! The book illustrates what the things you're making should look like. For instance, they'll show a picture of a cake that has been cooked too long, one cooked just right, and one undercooked. It's fantastic to have that visual reference. -Delicious!!! Haven't tried a recipe yet that wasn't completely yummy.
This is coming from a well-seasoned chocolaholic. I would recommend this book as a housewarming gift, a gift for newlyweds, a gift for a teen moving away from home, or a gift for anyone looking to learn how to bake delicious things!

I loved this cookbook! The recipes sound delicious and use everday foods. The picutes of the finished product are wonderful. I have already earmarked several to try.
