5 out of 5 stars Wonderful series of new cookbooks for young folks   January 8, 2003

I bought the whole series of SuperChef cookbooks for my six year-old great niece this Christmas. I was somewhat hesitant to give them to her this year since, although she is a very good begining reader, I thought the reading level in these books might be daunting for her. Much to my suprise and delight, after opening them she was immediately entranced and examined each one page by page asking questions about foods that were new to her and remarking about those with which she was familiar. The day after Christmas she and I prepared an entire meal from the Italian cookbook. She read what she could from the recipes and I read the rest aloud to her as we worked together. The entire family raved about the delicious meal we prepared (a polenta and sausage pie, asparagus, green salad, and a rich chocolate-walnut cake). My great niece beamed with pride throughout the meal. When cousins came to visit during the holidays, out of all the presents she had received the first she showed them was the cookbooks. Later, after the New Year, she cooked a meal from the Mexican cookbook (with adult assistance) and called me to tell me all about it. As a former social studies teacher, I am impressed with the rich historical and cultural background provided for each country. The photographs and maps in all of the books are beautiful. This is not your typical "graham cracker face with marshmallow eyes and gum drop mouth" children's cookbook! Instead, children will find real recipes that will challenge them not only to learn to cook, but also to learn more about the world around them. Older children will undoubtly enjoy them even more than my great niece did. I highly recommend these books for children (and adults as well)!!
