Perhaps you may not have noticed the beautiful spiraling patterns on sunflower heads; Druse explains that all plants feature such spirals, and that they correspond exactly to mathematical principles that have captivated great thinkers (and artists) throughout history.

Ken Druse explores the myths, mysteries and fascinating stories behind plants in this beautifully illustrated book. He starts out by discussing the hazardous expeditions of great plant explorers and the great risks (sometimes deadly) they took to bring exciting new plants to their countries. A chapter titled "The Garden of Good and Evil" explores the dark side of plants - those that are poisonous as well as those used throughout history for beneficial purposes. Anecdotes about the inner working of plants, like pollination, symmetry of design, and fragrance make for fascinating reading. Generously illustrated with gorgeous color photographs (a close-up of the seedhead of a sunflower is simply awesome), this book is another winner by an outstanding garden writer.
