Product Description
Southern Hog Bay Recipes is an all pork cookbook that leaves you cooking everything but the squeal! When Newton First Committee contacted the ABDR Advisory Board about putting on a hog bay in Newton, Texas, they jumped all over it. It would be called the Annual James Bean Memorial Newton County Hog Bay Show Down, after Mary Lou Mott's son, James, who passed away March 28, 2002. It seemed only fitting because of his passion for the sport of hog baying, something that ran in the family - after all, his paw-paw was named Hog Skinner! Alongside inventive recipes, you will experience a Hog Bay Showdown in Newton County, Texas. The type of wild hogs they are up against will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. The yipping and squealing will keep you cooking.or not. National Hog Bayers and their dogs, such as Catahoula and Black Mouth Cur, hog the spotlight with their perfect scores. The recipe Fatback to go will keep you High On The Hog through out the cookbook, and you will be wondering Who Let The Hogs Out. While the Hog Bayers are hoofin' it on stage to get their trophy, you will be in Hog Heaven eating your Pork Kabob. Just as you think the hog bay is over here comes Roger Wiegand with a long pig tale.

5 out of 5 stars Many Interesting Recipes   September 4, 2005

Author Mary Lou Mott has written this book in memory of her beloved son, James Kenneth Bean Jr. James loved hog baying, not sure what that is? Read the book to find out how this sport originated, how many people really enjoy it, and some interesting facts about hogs; a lot of facts I had no clue about and found to be an informative addition to the work.

The book includes recipe after recipe on different variations of cooking pork. Each recipe is a contribution from the author's friends and family; we even have state senators and representatives sharing their favorites. On each page we are treated to some wonderful pictures that depict the joy of life. Perhaps it is a tender picture with great-grandpa and the children, or a grouping of friends and family. They are like a journey without words that adds a personal touch to the work.

The recipes sound mouth-watering and I love the idea of trying time-tested ones that have been family favorites for years. I have to try "Apple Baked Pork Chops," (pg. 39, contributed by Gary Bell). They really sound good; and my daughter is determined to make"Breakfast Trash,"(pg 53, contributed by Tommy Burk), for her family.

If you enjoy the sport of hog baying or just love eating pork, this book is for you. Presented in a comfortable, down home style, it's packed full of recipes to wet your whistle and fill your tummy with good eating, this one will be a treasurer in your kitchen.
A warm tribute from a mother to her son that will bless many along the way.
