Product Description The Philokalia is a collection of texts written between the fourth and the fifteenth centuries by spiritual masters of the Orthodox Christian tradition. First published in Greek in 1782, then translated into Slavonic and later into Russian, The Philokalia has exercised an influence in the recent history of the Orthodox Church far greater than that of any book apart from the Bible. It is concerned with themes of universal importance: how man may develop his inner powers and awake from illusion; how he may overcome fragmentation and achieve spiritual wholeness; how he may attain the life of contemplative stillness and union with God.
Compiled by Bishop Kallistos Ware

greek/hindu philosopy and buddhism in a xian guise January 9, 2009 i have read most of the volumes and it lead me to many profound understandings. i enjoyed reading them they were breath of fresh air they actually made sense if you see them from a oriental point of view. the dali lama and an educated buddhist would see how far the roots of gautama buddha teachings reached westward. the teachings in the philokalia an ethnic version of buddhism. the jesus prayer is a mantra and the atheist teachings of the philokalia are so profound that you lose the pagan fear of hell and the devil as only being the same as the asuras and demons of the hindu and buddhist teachings. any non-xian that took a serious read of these texts would understand the core and truth of the greek teachings to be a version of their own.. like little nuggets of truth in all religions and philosophies. the xian faith is filled with paganisms rituals and superstitions like an anti-god figure and literal god and hells that were not present in the hebrew and jewish faiths . one can not understand xian spirituality if one does not understand Amidaism and buddhism or the hindu or indus valley roots of hindu tribe of the isrealites and now called the followers of judaism.. these books are a must read for an spiritual seeker they go in with the zohar, kabballah, bagahvata gitta and pali buddhist texts!
(Eternal) Life-changing December 12, 2008 The Philokalia is a precious gem hidden away from Western eyes for too long. In reading it, I've discovered a world of Christian spiritual wisdom that can't be matched, and which has been largely lost in the tradition I have been raised in. The ascetic and monastic writers in the Orthodox tradition show an unwavering desire to achieve true union with God and the transformation of their lives. This is hard stuff, it will inspire you or make you despair of yourself (maybe both), but if it does, there is always grace from Christ to lift you up. The Philokalia is a guide along the way to salvation. There cannot be a high enough recommendation for a work of this astounding quality and richness. My favourite contributor is Diadochos of Photiki, who provides a good introduction to this way of life.
Philokalia - Orthodox Christian's favorite book apart from the Bible. September 28, 2008 My Joys, My Treasures,
The Philokalia is written for someone who is truly desiring to follow the path to heaven. The teaching in this set(vol. 1-4) is both divine and practical. They are given in "Proverbial" format to be simple in understanding yet powerful. One must take this book slow! The longer it takes to read and apply to your life in every aspect the better you will understand. Read this book but most importantly find a place deep in your soul to put it - protect it!!!

Refreshment February 8, 2008 Philokalia is a refreshing read for Western Christians. Surely the concept of serenity is one we can find worth exploring and softly pursuing.
Holy Wisdom December 3, 2007 Sublime wisdom from monastic Saints that reveals a penetrating depth of knowledge regarding the human heart and mind that is very much relevant for today. Nevertheless, the wisdom needs to be read within the faith context of the monks and the broader context of the spiritual life they led to allow its full application to be understood and realised in one's own life.
